Si mon moine voulait danser! (Danse, mon moine, danse). The title is a play on words: moine means both monk and spinning top in French. The lyrics speak of persuading mon moine to dance by offering various articles of clothing, such as a hood or cap.After a brief, yet bold, introduction, the piece jumps into a straightforward rendition of the tune. From there, the melody is repeated, bringing in other voices and added flourishes. While the tune starts to repeat a third time, it doesn’t get to finish its full statement. It’s interrupted by a run up through the ensemble into a rollicking 7/8 section.With a rhythmic accompaniment underneath, the jaunty melody begins in the third clarinets. The upper instruments take over briefly in 6/8, then the tune returns to 7/8. After a quick breather, the accompaniment introduces an upward sweep motif. This alternates with the accompaniment pattern heard at the beginning of the 7/8 section.The lower voices then take control, driving downward into a different tonality and mood. An undulating accompaniment sets a dreamlike feel, with different voices quoting fragments of the theme. The accompaniment transfers between voices throughout the section, eventually changing back into a 3/4, then a 2/4 feel, resulting in a transition back to the original feel of the piece.The low voices get the melody, with rhythmic accompaniment and racing runs throughout the other sections. The melody goes a bit topsy-turvy before the group comes together in the descending quarter note motif from the beginning of the piece, bringing us to the coda. There’s one final quote of the opening of the main theme from the low voices, leading to a whirlwind in the first and Eb with accented notes and suspensions underneath. The Eb pipes up with one last comment and the group closes out the piece.Also available for concert band (S0.708971)

One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. Where wild creatures go, so do we. It was best said by Jane Goodall: Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. If you’ve ever seen a funny video on YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, etc., chances are that you’ve heard this tune before…many many times.  It makes cute and funny videos, well, cuter and funnier.Kevin Macleod wrote this cute and funny tune, and it’s written to loop until the video ends.  The longer the video, the higher it goes (I think, although having a cute video last more than 5 minutes may wear you out.)  While I could have modulated it 5 times, I didn’t.  There is one key change, and after that key change, this cute and funny tune goes Radio City Rockette-ish before definitely coming to an end at around the 2 minute mark.Scored for clarinet choir – 4 Bb, alto, bass, and contrabass.  This would be a great recital opener, closer, or filler.  Or, you could have a few members of your group act out a cute and funny scene to it.  The possibilities are endless!Duration: 2 minutes.

It is a real epic of a piece, not dissimilar to Bohemian Rhapsody in the way that it moves regularly and swiftly through different styles, tempos, keys, moods and times. It is arranged here to suit a large ensemble and has an optional drum kit part for additional sparkle should a drummer be available. It features most of the instruments at some point and is exciting and challenging to play across the whole ensemble. Whilst challenging to play, this arrangement has been performed many times and is an impressive concert item. It lasts for over 5 minutes.
