It is same musical type as a riff in rock music or a loop. This montuno for clarinets is a deep dive into the rhythm, the simple chord sequence, and sometimes complex combinations all within a series of 4 bar phrases. The rhythm is the 2/3 clave pattern heard in the percussion part. In case someone in the group is so inclined to provide a solo melody, chords are provided. As delightful as that would be, the variety already written in the montuno is sufficient. The movements are: Buzzy Delights (Honey Bees), It Isn't Easy Being a Cuckoo, Jaguar Surprise, and Walrus Jump.Each movement imagines a different animal or insect living in its habitat as it gradually deteriorates. One might think this would be sad, violent music, but each earthly creature is shown in its musical habitat where it happily does what it does best....bees buzzing around flowers, cuckoos gently calling in the forest, Walruses jumping not so gracefully onto sea ice, Jaguars quietly stalking their prey. The habitat changes are depicted by gradual use of unstable scales, and the sometimes hidden ancient tune of the Dies Irae, the Day of Wrath.The point I wish to make is how humans must be watchful of wildlife habitats because we are all in this limited world together. Where wild creatures go, so do we. It was best said by Jane Goodall: Only if we understand can we care. Only if we care will we help. Canons Firing From an Ever Rising Staircase, Or, Heed the Effer's Frantic Calls  This is the 1st movement of a piece for clarinet choir written by John Gibson called Klarifications. The complete is also available. This movement is set for solo Eb clarinet; Bb clarinets 1,2, and 3; 2 Alto clarinets (with alternate Bb parts); 2 Bass clarinets; Bb Contrabass clarinet (with an alternate Eb Contra Alto part). To explain the title just a bit, the ever rising staircase is an aural trick that, if done precisely, sounds like the music keeps rising without really doing so.  This was derived from what is called a Shepard's Tone. The canons firing are not cannons! The bass instruments play small sections of actual canons (like fancy rounds) written by J S Bach, Mozart, and others. Each time the solo Eb clarinet (the Effer) announces the coming canon firing in a frantic sort of way.  Considering the Eb clarinet part, and the need for the Bb clarinets to carry the rising staircase, this is for an advanced group. It runs a little over 3 minutes in length. The recording is computer generated, although I plan to record a live version someday.

Parry's English Suite was 1st performed in 1914 and published in 1921 (after his death). This setting for clarinet ensemble could be played as a clarinet quartet or as a larger clarinet ensemble doubling parts.  Also an alternate alto clarinet part is provided which doubles the bass clarinet. Just a performance suggestion: the 1st clarinet part has few breaks and so a plan for breathing should be considered! This is a really happy tune, so enjoy!

He was mostly the god of the gentle west wind, but he could also be not-so-gentle and a danger to sailors. He could be a horse, too! Mozart's Symphony #39 features the clarinets in many ways, so to set the Minuet movement (3rd movement) for clarinet choir works very well. This arrangement takes a different approach by scoring for 2 solo clarinets playing the music mostly as found in the original orchestration, with the remaining clarinet parts filling in the remaining wind and string parts as needed. I suggest having one person on each of the solo 1st and solo 2nd parts, with at least 3 on a part for the two section Bb clarinet parts. There is also an alto clarinet part with an alternate Bb part if needed. To keep the music light, there is no Eb soprano part or contra bass part.
