SWEET SUITE: QUARTET FOR CLARINETS

Featuring the music of ALEXANDRE GUILMANT

In this delightful suite of 4 movements, I have chosen four very eclectic works by the French Organist and Composer Alexandre Guilmant. In his time (1837-1911) he helped found the Schola Cantorum of Paris, and served as Professor of Organ at the Paris Conservatoire from 1896 until his death. His Wiki entry is an interesting read!! Oh, and don't be fooled by the gentle lilt of the first movement!

1. CHANT DU MATIN

This jolly piece has a very memorable theme, with an almost Music Hall 'middle eight' section, littered with grace notes, and ends with a big 'film' finish!

2. FUGUE GRAVE

Blessed with beautifully lush harmonies, and with the unusual theme based on the diminished 7th, it quite literally makes the Clarinet Quartet sing.

3. ASPIRATION RELIGIEUSE

Despite the religious connotations in the title, this is an almighty vehicle for the Bass Clarinet to shine!

The 3 Bb Clarinets hold a singularly static but lovely theme above, as the Bass Clarinet tumbles over the chords with relish from start to finish. A must play for your Bass player!

4. FUGHETTA IN A MINOR

This is just a fantastic musical romp for 4 accomplished players! Once one player has the jaunty melody line, everyone wants to be a part of it! ... also includes some well written 'quirky' off-beat rhythms on the Bass part. Good luck!!

Percy Graingers' interesting life and eccentricities are widely known, however he was a master of his art. Most musicians will be familiar with the Tonic-Solfa ( Do Re Me etc), without boring you too much, a 'moveable' Do is the tonic of any key, a 'Fixed Do' is always a C !! In this piece Grainger employs his own 'Immovable Do', a C that is constant throughout the piece, even though it's in F!!! Now this would cause difficulties for any wind group!!! Graingers' instructions for anyone playing the melody on the Harmonium & Organ .. these notes should be stuck fast with pencils, and thus held down to the very end of the piece... So my solution is to seamlessly dovetail the C between an Eb and a Bb Clarinet, so that the fixed Do is to all intents and purposes always sounding. Graingers subtitle to the piece was ' The Cyphering C', which according to Chambers dictionary Cyphering means:- ' In an Organ, continuous sounding of a note not played, due to a mechanical failure '! The more melodic parts are a joy to listen to, with an infectious original tune, weaving between all the players.

Nobility and generosity are allegedly characteristics of those born under Jupiter, and in the slower, middle section marked Andante Maestoso, perhaps the most well-known theme from The Planets (and the theme on which this arrangement is based), Holst provides a broad tune embodying these traits. In 1921, Holst adapted the theme to fit the patriotic poem I Vow to Thee, My Country by Cecil Spring Rice, and was written as a unison song with orchestra. It did not appear as the hymn tune until 1926, when Holst harmonized this melody, named Thaxted, named after the English village where he had lived for many years. Holst's friend Ralph Vaughan Williams included it in Songs of Praise. These 4 complex and musically rewarding pieces are taken from the original Organ score by Karg-Elert. Atonal in style, each of the 4 chosen movements offers a wealth of harmonic and rhythmic intricacy, coupled with surprises like a waltz in 7/8, recitativo, a March, and other challenges that should keep the players enthralled with the composers inventiveness.

'Adagietto' From Symphony No.5 By Gustav Mahler.
Arranged for Clarinet Sextet by Stephen Davies.

If a composer could say what he had to say in words, he would not bother trying to say it in music.
So said Mahler about the Adagietto, originally written for the love of his life Alma Schindler as a present, but there hangs a tale available on most youtubes' and wikipedias' !! Indeed Mahler wrote a poem for Alma, the German text of which can easily match the main opening motiv; (c,d,e, E...F.. etc)

Wie ich Dich liebe, Du meine Sonne               In which way I love you, my Sunbeam
ich kann mit Worten Dir's nicht sagen           I cannot tell you with words
Nur meine Sehnsucht kann ich Dir klagen     Only my longing, my love and my bliss

Anyhow, here it is arranged for Clarinet Sextet, best played delicately and soulfully or listened to on a decent pair of headphones!!

In this arrangement of 'Berceuse' by Cyril Scott, I've taken the liberty of adding Jazz changes to the original score, but maintaining the melodic flow, which incidentally, has a delightful descending melody line that is shared between all the players.

Cyril Meir Scott (1879-1970), was a great English composer, writer, poet and occultist. He created over 400 musical compositions in his long life including works for Violin, Piano, a Cello Concerto, Symphonies and Operas.

Henry Litolff was a British virtuoso pianist, and a prolific composer. Today he is only remembered for the glittering Scherzo from his Concerto Symphonique No.4.

So 'hats off' to Litolff for this energetic vignette that I've tinkered with, it should bring a smile to players and audiences everywhere one day.... er.... hopefully one day!
