I wrote “The Impossible Standard� in honor of my sister, Gretchen Hanna. She’s someone who endured so much during her time at Tennessee Tech University, specifically during her struggle to change her major from Vocal Music Education to Vocal Music Performance. It took Gretchen three attempts to pass her Vocal Performance barrier, and she never gave up no matter what. She graduated in May of 2022 and I couldn’t be more proud. This piece symbolizes the low point of Gretchen’s first attempt all the way up to that moment of triumph and relief when she finally was able to change her major. It had its world premiere on July 9th, 2023 at the ICA ClarinetFest 2023 in Denver, Colorado, and was performed by the Tennessee Tech Clarinet Choir under the direction of Dr. Mark Cramer.
