Walter the Weary Werewolf is a spooky and original duet written by David McKeown for one Flute and one Alto Saxophone.

Walter has a young family and a responsible job as a vet, so he needs a good night’s sleep. When there’s a full moon he sprouts fangs, claws and body hair like all the other werewolves, but rather than howling, he scratches the back of his neck with his leg and goes back to sleep with a whimper. His wife was surprised the first time, but she’s used to it now.

Walter the Weary Werewolf is suitable for players at an advanced intermediate level and above. The main melody has many accidentals and challenging timing, while the faster middle section features irregular metre. The range is accessible for both players. With a playing-time of just under four minutes, Walter the Weary Werewolf is a perfect spooky addition to any performance program, formal or informal. 7.40pm is a traditional Russian Jewish tune, often performed by Klezmer musicians. This version is arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Alto Saxophone.

It isn’t completely clear where the title 7.40pm comes from. One interpretation is that 7.40pm was the time the Odessa tram conductors finished work and danced to this tune. But there are versions titled 7.40am which may refer to the time of Jewish early morning prayers. Whatever the origin, there are several Russian recordings of 7.40pm that predate the 1917 revolution.

7.40pm is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. After a slow and expressively beginning, the melody switches to dance tempo.  7.40pm is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above. With a performance time of a little over three minutes, this version of 7.40pm is perfect for recital and concert performances, both formal and informal. The Baby Sheep Shuffle is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. In the musical sense Shuffle is a combination of the jazz swing rhythm with a backbeat. Shuffle rhythms can be found in the Swing music of Glenn Miller right through Rock’n’Roll, R’n’B and to the modern day. The Shuffle connection allowed Swing dance styles like Lindy Hop and Jitterbug to be adapted for Rock’n’Roll music in the late 50s and beyond.

The Baby Sheep Shuffle is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by the fast tempo and syncopated rhythms and accidentals. This gospel version of Amazing Grace is arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Alto Saxophone. Written in 1773 by John Newton and set to the traditional melody New Britain, Amazing Grace is perhaps the best-known and best-loved hymn in the world.

John Newton, led a dissolute life as sailor in the slave trade for many years before marriage, along with a close encounter with death at sea, dramatically changed his perspective. He lived out his later years as a devout and charismatic clergyman in the English countryside, renowned for his direct and personal style.

Amazing Grace is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, though some of the rhythms in the third verse may be a challenge for less experienced players. Huapango de Hannah is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Alto Saxophone. The Huapango is a traditional Mexican style of music and dance, often mixing triple and duple metres. It is played on violin, accordion, and local 5-string variants of the guitar such as the vihuela, huapanguera and jarana. The Huapango rhythm famously inspired the song America in Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story.

If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. The mixed metres, alternating between 6/8 and 3/4, will present a rhythmic challenge, while following the precise articulation in the score will help convey the dance style of the Huapango. How Far I’ll Go is one of the best loved songs from the 2016 Disney film Moana. This version is arranged as a Duet for one Flute and one Alto Saxophone.

Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, two versions were recorded for the film, one by the lead actress AuliÊ»i Cravalho and the other by Alessia Cara. How Far I’ll Go won a Grammy in 2018 and has been consistently the most streamed song in the Disney canon since its release.

Musicians at an intermediate standard will find this ideal for formal and informal concert performances. Total performance time is around three minutes. This is the full length version as sung in the film, with the verse, bridge and chorus performed twice and a final chorus a semitone higher.
