It’s Been a Long Long Time is best known to modern audiences as the song at the end of The Avengers, Endgame, where Steve Rogers, after seventy years, finally gets his dance with Peggy Carter. The song of course, is much older. Two versions of It’s Been a Long Long Time topped the charts in late 1945, and as US servicemen returned from Europe and the Pacific, it perfectly caught the mood of the times. One version was by Bing Crosby, and the other by the Harry James Orchestra featuring Kitty Kallen on vocals. It is the latter version that is heard in Endgame and the one that forms the basis of this arrangement.Musicians at an intermediate standard will find It’s Been a Long Long Time ideal for formal and informal concert performances. with both solo instrument and piano enjoying plenty of melodic interest. It was included on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and an orchestration featured on the soundtrack of the movie The Sting in 1973. Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films. The song was originally in 6/8 but I have set it in 1/2 in order to get the pulse and phrasing I want. (Yes, 1 minim/half note per bar.) The original accompaniment was broken arpeggios, but now it is all about the rich new blocked chords. With repeats and a D.S. I have covered all 4 verses and bridges. Enjoy a fresh take on this forever classic.
