Soprano voice and piano - Medium - Digital Download SKU: MQ.8317-4E Composed by Gwyneth W. Walker. Secular, 21st century. 4 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8317-4E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8317-4E). The poetry of Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) is especially appealing due to the wide range of topics, diversity of mood and peculiar imagination of the poet. The writings are reflective, passionate, witty, sensuous, observant and ridiculously humorous. Her heart soars. Her mind pokes fun! Emily was truly a New Englander. Her poems are understated and compact. Her love of Nature focuses on small things- birds, bees, meadows and a pond. In creating the musical settings, the composer (herself a New Englander) endeavored to capture the spirit of the poetry, and of the poet, with songs diverse in style, and concise in form. Everything from romance to frogs is explored, briefly. Great delight is taken in creating musical translations of the colorful imagery: hopeful birds hopping about (Hope with Feathers). These are the poet's Letters to the World. She lived as a recluse, yet her words took flight-traveling the universe as messengers of the soul.

They Say That Hope Is Happiness TEXT They say that Hope is happiness-  But genuine Love must prize the past; And mem'ry wakes the thoughts that bless  They rose the first-they set the last. And all that mem'ry loves the most  Was once our only hope to be:And all that hope adored and lostHath melted into memory.Alas! it is delusion all-  The future cheats us from afar,Nor can we be what we recall,  Nor dare we think on what we are.

Soprano voice,Vocal Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.873026 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Contemporary. 6 pages. Sally Whitwell #3867191. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873026). Composer’s Note - Warm Where Snowflakes LieThrough my music, I try to bring to people a sense of optimism about the world. Music has the power to uplift, to exalt, to fill people with joy and hope, so I am drawn to texts that do a similar thing. Christina Rossetti’s poem The Key-Note has this optimism, even with a gentle sting in the proverbial tail. She appreciated that everything has a season, that life happens in cycles, that in the face of the darkest Winter there is always the hope of Spring, a hope made real by the appearance of the red-breasted robin in the snow. This song is for anyone who has ever felt hopeless, disenfranchised, or unable to see the light at the end of the tunnel.-- Sally Whitwell

Lord, I Cry Unto Thee (Psalm 141:1-2) is a somber prayer in a simple ABA form that concludes on a poignant note.II. Great is the Lord (Psalm 48:1-2) is a frolicking and hopeful celebration of God's holiness. It too follows a simple ABA form, with an especially melodic contrasting B section.III. He That Dwelleth (Psalm 91:1-4) brings a serene resolution to the tension and energy of the first two parts.

High Voice,Vocal Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.893973 Composed by Gabriel Ruiz-Bernal. Contemporary,Holiday,Musical/Show. 14 pages. Gabriel Ruiz-Bernal #6331901. Published by Gabriel Ruiz-Bernal (A0.893973). Commissioned by Colleen Daly for the St. Louis Concert seriesText by Rabindranath TagoreWhere have I come from, where did you pick me up? the baby asked its mother. She answered, half crying, half laughing, and clasping the baby to her breast-You were hidden in my heart as its desire, my darling. You were in the dolls of my childhood's games; and when with clay I made the image of my god every morning, I made the unmade you then. You were enshrined with our household deity, in his worship I worshipped you.In all my hopes and my loves, in my life, in the life of my mother you have lived. In the lap of the deathless Spirit who rules our home you have been nursed for ages. When in girlhood my heart was opening its petals, you hovered as a fragrance about it.Your tender softness bloomed in my youthful limbs, like a glow in the sky before the sunrise.Heaven's first darling, twain-born with the morning light, you have floated down the stream of the world's life, and at last you have stranded on my heart. As I gaze on your face, mystery overwhelms me; you who belong to all have become mine. For fear of losing you I hold you tight to my breast. What magic has snared the world's treasure in these slender arms of mine?

Soprano voice,Vocal Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1024940 Composed by Abigail Gilson. Contemporary. 5 pages. Abigail Gilson #3675473. Published by Abigail Gilson (A0.1024940).          The main feeling of this poem is hope, just hope to make the world a better place, to help someone in need. A young girl, so naive and innocent, who believes that she can live a good life by making the lives of others better. But as the song cycle continues we see that for some women, their dreams will never become a reality. We see hints of this in this piece, as in the second section, the piece dips into a minor key. Suggesting that the woman girl has started to give up on her dreams. But the girl keeps singing, saying that she’ll help a fainting robin. She has not given up yet, and will not let her dreams fade.

Soprano voice and piano - difficult - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q6665 For soprano and piano. Composed by John Casken. This edition: Sheet music. Downloadable. Duration 12 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6665. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6665). French.Chansons de Verlaine were completed in 2006. The third song, Colloque sentimental, was written in 2003 for Alison Smart and Katharine Durran’s New French Song project. It was as a result of having written one short song to words by Verlaine that I subsequently decided to set two further poems to make a group of three. All three were also set by Debussy: L’ombre des arbres and Chevaux de bois appear in Ariettes Oubliées, while Colloque sentimental belongs to Debussy’s second set of Fêtes Galantes. The poems I have grouped together are linked by the idea of three different landscapes. In the first, Verlaine precedes the words of his own sad, pale landscape with words from Cyrano de Bergerac about a nightingale who fears himself about to fall into a river and drown. In the second poem the landscape has been occupied by a fairground where men, women and children watch as the hobby-horses go round and round before night falls and the church tolls a passing-bell. The third poem takes us into an old park where two ghosts recall their past. The one wonders if the other remembers the happy days of their past lives, but the other doesn’t want to remember, barely acknowledging the closeness they once shared, seeing only that ‘hope has fled, defeated, towards the dark sky.’ I am very grateful to Roger Nichols and Dominique Mols for their advice with the setting of the French texts and with the translations. John Casken Colloque sentimental was first performed by Alison Smart and Katherine Durran at the Purcell Room in London on 13 July 2004.

Soprano voice,Vocal Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.873025 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Contemporary. 14 pages. Sally Whitwell #3867185. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873025). Composer’s Note - The BirdsI lived for a couple of years in a little top floor Art Deco apartment in Sydney’s Kings Cross. There were always birds sitting on my window sill because of the huge Jacaranda tree outside. I was at a bit of a crossroads in my life at that time, and would spend at least an hour daily walking in the neighbourhood, along those twisting, sloping streets and slowly eroding sandstone staircases so typical of Sydney’s harbourside suburbs. On the wall by such a staircase very close to my home was a tiny red spray painted bird with little music notes emanating from his beak. His was a constant presence in my life, I really rather liked him.Birds seemed to be making appearances everywhere in my life at that time, which I took as some kind of message from the universe. I was reading quite a lot of Christina Rossetti that year too, enjoying her writings about birds and all that they symbolised for her; beauty and sadness, hope and joy. There was a quiet optimism in her words, sometimes veiled but always present, which propelled me to write this song cycle T he Birds.-- Sally Whitwell
