Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Contemporary. 51 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #4629791. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869598).

Sappho ... Five Poems by H.D. (2019) is dedicated to Öznur Hasibe TülüoÄŸlu.   I heard her sing at her senior recital at the New England Conservatory of Music this spring and I immediately thought I should write a song cycle for her.

I love the poetry of H.D. (aka Hilda Doolittle).  My first attempt at setting her poems to music was in 2015.  The poems in that song cycle focused on several figures from Greek mythology: Adonis, Circe, Lethe, Daphne, Evadne, etc.

The words in this cycle are Ms. Doolittle's poetic musings on fragments left behind by the ancient Greek poet Sappho.

1.    Fragment 41a ... thou flittest to Andromeda.
2.    Fragment 41c
3.    Fragment 40 Love ... bitter sweet
4.    Fragment 113 Neither honey nor bee for me.
5.    Fragment 68 ... even in the house of Hades.

By Robert Schumann (1852). Composed by Robert Schumann. Arranged by Aribert Reimann. This edition: single sheet. Downloadable, Separate edition. Op. 135. Duration 9 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q45888. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q45888).

German • English • French • Italian.

Two things in particular link Aribert Reimann with Robert Schumann, whom he much admires: their interest in the dark side of human existence and their great commitment to literature. The both took an interest in the poems by the Scottish queen Mary Stuart written at the end of her life during her imprisonment. For a long time, Reimann had cherished the wish to orchestrate the lieder by Schumann based on these poems, ‘but I always lacked in courage […] to break up the rather barren piano part which is formally self-contained and complete in itself’. But while working on Sieben Fragmente für Orchester in 1988, he decided to take the risk. And although Schumann‘s music is never really touched, Reimann succeeds in bringing the deeply moving expression of the lieder even closer to the listener.

Composed by Gabriel Ruiz-Bernal. Contemporary,Holiday,Musical/Show. 14 pages. Gabriel Ruiz-Bernal #6331901. Published by Gabriel Ruiz-Bernal (A0.893973).

Commissioned by Colleen Daly for the St. Louis Concert series
Text by Rabindranath Tagore

Where have I come from, where did you pick me up? the baby asked its mother.
She answered, half crying, half laughing, and clasping the baby to her breast-
You were hidden in my heart as its desire, my darling.
You were in the dolls of my childhood's games; and when with clay I made the image of my god every morning, I made the unmade you then.
You were enshrined with our household deity, in his worship I worshipped you.
In all my hopes and my loves, in my life, in the life of my mother you have lived.
In the lap of the deathless Spirit who rules our home you have been nursed for ages.
When in girlhood my heart was opening its petals, you hovered as a fragrance about it.
Your tender softness bloomed in my youthful limbs, like a glow in the sky before the sunrise.
Heaven's first darling, twain-born with the morning light, you have floated down the stream of the world's life, and at last you have stranded on my heart.
As I gaze on your face, mystery overwhelms me; you who belong to all have become mine.
For fear of losing you I hold you tight to my breast. What magic has snared the world's treasure in these slender arms of mine?

After poems by Friedrich Hölderlin. Composed by Detlev Mueller-Siemens. This edition: Sheet music. Downloadable. Duration 12 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q40373. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q40373).

German.

Two poems of Friedrich Hölderlin bearing almost the same title form the basis of the text for 'Zwei Lieder' (Two Songs): 'Die Aussicht' and 'Aussicht'. Unlike as with common musical settings of poems, Detlev Müller-Siemens has split the vocal part in two levels. On the one hand, Hölderlin's text is recited, on the other hand, fragments of the poems are sung at a lower, contemplative level. 'Like vague memories, ascending from the inside from afar. An idyll that becomes entangled in its own images.'.

Hot off the press! Dramatic, almost operatic song for soprano and piano (with rattle and mallet) that brings to life the tragic story of two Coahuilteco sisters sold into slavery during the Spanish mission era in Texas

I am worth nothing (2022), a song for soprano and piano by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP)

Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble for Eternal Graffiti April 9, 2022, Austin, Texas

Program note: Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble and composed by Adrienne Inglis, I am worth nothing sets a stunning Coahuilteco/English poem by Texas poet Lisa Kay Adam. From the phrase PÄ«ntci nakÄmmam axÄm (I am worth nothing), Adam creates a vivid story of two young Coahuiltecan sisters and their encounters with newly arrived Spanish settlers and mission priests in the eighteenth century. Musically, the florid phrases and haunting modalities join with the sounds of drums and melancholic bells to paint a picture of exploitation, early death, and a lost way of life in the western gulf coastal plains.

Text: I am not worthy - PÄ«ntci nakÄmmam axÄm, poem by Lisa Kay Adam from her book xuÄi: mission, house, village, town, published in 2018 by Lamar University Literary Press, used with permission

Ballad from the opera The Golden Dragon. Composed by Peter Eotvos. This edition: Sheet music. Downloadable. Duration 8 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q32132. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q32132).

German • English.

The Long Journey, the final monologue of the opera The Golden Dragon based on the eponymous play by Roland Schimmelpfennig, has been given the air of a ballad. A young Chinese works illegally in an Asian restaurant of Anytown. Not having a health insurance, he bleeds to death after a botched dental operation. His colleagues throw his body into the river which runs through the town and carries the body to the sea. He floats back to his home country – this last journey is the theme of the monologue.

Fragment from Das Urteil (The Judgement) by Franz Kafka. Composed by Christian Jost. This edition: Sheet music. Downloadable. Duration 7 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6176. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6176).

German.

Kafka's œuvre is interspersed with moments of utter anxiety. Moments in which, induced by adrenalin, the blood pressure rises. Blood vessels which seem to constrict, pump enormous quantities of blood the pressure of which might make one believe that the head is going to explode. In The Judgment, an innocent opening story leads to one of the most unusual showdowns in world literature: The beloved father sentences his son to death by drowning; the son immediately obeys since his life, his existence almost explodes, becomes blurred, dissolves at the moment the judgment is pronounced. For me, the 'self' driving him – I imagine this as a high sound in the inner ear – could only be a soprano. This is why the actual 'fall' has turned out to be clear, almost friendly and why Georg only seems to want to breathe a soft and quiet 'Dear parents, I have always loved you' during the fall while no longer keeping the singing tone, shortly before death, almost casually, takes hold of him. Christian Jost.
