“A Drop of Nelson’s Blood” (Roll the Old Chariot Along) is one of the most gruesome sea shanties that has evolved from shanty crew to shanty crew, and from pub to pub.  Its beginnings are suspect: Is this a variation of the African-American spiritual “The Golden Chariot” or is this a parody of a Salvation Army revivalist hymn?  The dilemma: How to get a dead man’s body back home while at sea. Why preserve his corpse in a barrel of rum!  This ‘concert’ setting of the shanty is scored for 4-part men’s chorus with piano accompaniment.  Performance time: 4:20+-.

A traditional sea shanty from the 1850s celebrates events from the 19th century Mexican-American War in which the Mexican troops were led by Antonio López de Santa Anna and the American army was led by Zachary Taylor. The song has been recorded many times, famously by the folk groups The Weavers and The Kingston Trio. The fiery minor key setting will be a showstopper for low voice choirs in high school and up.
