This arrangement for men's choir (TTBB) was commissioned by the Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus in dedicated to a devoted member whom they lost far too soon. The ebb and flow of dynamics, constrasts of legato and marcato, a dramatic piano accompaniment, plus some unresolved vocal harmonies, allow for a series of emotions to be painted such as those experienced in the grief cycle. 

From Canadian band Simple Plan, ‘Gone Too Soon’ was first released in 2011. The inspiration for the song was the tragic loss of so many talented artists, actors and musicians to drug overdoses or suicide. On the Simple Plan website, drummer Chuck Corneau explained: “We thought it was so sad to see so much talent being wasted. Also there were people in our family and some great friends we lost. So the song is a combination of all that. Yes the song is about missing someone who is gone�. Singer Pierre Bouvier added: “Hopefully this song can help people that are going through similar situations where they feel like someone in their family or one of their friends has gone too soon.�.

Bogoróditse Dévo is the Old Church Slavonic version of the Hail Mary prayer. The lyrics are possibly most well-known from the Sergei Rachmaninoff choral setting.

My original version was composed in 2016 for the male choir Zero8, based in Stockholm, Sweden, before their trip to the annual Easter Festival in Moscow, Russia. The piece was later recorded and included on their 2017 album Mes très chers frères.
In connection with the publication of the piece, I made some minor adjustments and added an English translation of the lyrics. I also wrote a separate version for mixed choir SATB, available from Bo Ejeby Förlag. – Steven Hansen.
