“It Came Upon The Midnight Clear†is a poem written by American minister and author Edmund Sears in 1849 while depressed and struggling with the issue of war and peace. The tune in this arrangement was written by Richard Storrs Willis in 1850.
For four-part Men's Chorus (TTBB) with the melody primarily in the Bass, Tenor 1, and Tenor 2. The Baritone part is the most fun and holds the tag note at the end. Also works well for men's quartet (one singer per part).
This arrangement opens with a fanfare quoting the end of the third verse. Each verse represents a slight variation of harmony and text painting, and the end of the last verse moves into a coda which expresses the hope that Peace on Earth is indeed attainable. Moves through the keys of F Major (introduction), D Major (verses 1 and 2), B-flat Major (verses 3 and 4), and D Major (verse 5 and ending).Â
Difficulty 8/10.
Tenor 1 D3-A4.
Tenor 2 C#3-F#4.
