German.Auch wenn Moritz Hauptmann (1792–1868) von Hause aus eigentlich Geiger war, komponierte der Schüler (und spätere Freund) von Louis Spohr hauptsächlich Vokalmusik. Auf Empfehlung Mendelssohn Bartholdys wurde der Dresdner 1842 Thomaskantor und Musikdirektor in Leipzig. Dessen Werk sollte auch stilistisches Vorbild für Moritz Hauptmann werden. Um 1865 schrieb er eine Sammlung von „6 Liedern für 4-stimmigen Männerchor“, op. 55 (nach Texten aus Friedrich Osers „Naturliedern“), die in einer zeitgenössischen Besprechung als „schöne Lieder, die doch einmal aus voller Brust erklingen und dem Männerchor natürlich und geistig entsprechen“ gelobt wurden. Sie leben von einer klassizistisch-romantischen Tonsprache, sind fasslich und sangbar gesetzt – ein Leckerbissen für jeden Männerchor. Die „Abendruhe“ steht an vierter Stelle des Zyklus. Es ist ein ruhiger und getragener Satz, stimmungsvoll und harmonisch reizvoll.
