SKU: A0.888994

Composed by Quinn McMath. 20th Century,Contemporary. Octavo. 16 pages. Quinn McMath #6130747. Published by Quinn McMath (A0.888994).

6.75 x 10.5 inches

A Bridge Between an Ocean is an experimental contemporary piece that deals with the elusive and sometimes damaging transition away from childhood. The premise behind the piece is that the first tenor represents a boy realizing that his childhood is fleeting away. The other sections represent his collective internal self in the form of past, present, and future, offering consoling words towards the boy. This piece is to be driven with passion and emotion, as the premise is something most listeners will find connections to in their own lives.

A Bridge Between an Ocean is a great piece for an advanced men's group and would work well in any classical contemporary performance setting. This piece may also be appropriate for advanced high school and collegiate level groups. It is suggested that a pianist sit in rehearsals (not for performance) to help the members of the choir learn their parts.

Composed by Columbia - Thomas A. Becket, Sr. (1843) and Grand Old Flag - George M. Cohan (19. Arranged by Paul A. Jorg. Classical,Folk,Holiday,Instructional,Patriotic. Octavo. 5 pages. Paul A. Jorg #6139811. Published by Paul A. Jorg (A0.522448).

This a medley of two older, patriotic songs; both are public domain songs. A little bit of Columbia's history:  In the early years of our country's founding, the name was synominous with the United States of America; hense, our nation's capital - The District of Columbia. Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean' is a United States patriotic song which was popular during the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, especially during the Civil War era.  It functioned as an unofficial national anthem in competition with Hail, Columbia and The Star-Spangled Banner until the latter's formal adoption as the national anthem of the United States in 1931.
IT'S A GRAND OLD FLAG  is more widely known; most folks sang it in elementary school.

SKU: BJ.1123

Composed by Sven Hagvil. Secular. Octavo. 65 pages. Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital #1123. Published by Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital (BJ.1123).

8.27 x 11.7 inches.

Sven Hagvil's Symphony of Solitarities is a choral symphony in three movements (This oceanic feeling, Lonelinesses, Solitude) for mixed choir and soprano saxophone (or clarinet). The piece, which is around 30 minutes, is composed for S:t Johannes Chamber Choir in Stockholm, conducted by Karin Oldgren. At the first performance Anders Paulsson, world renown saxophonist to whom the symphony is dedicated, was soloist on soprano saxophone.

The lyrics, written by the composer, are dealing with man's existential loneliness, a loneliness that we paradoxically share with all other people.

In the second movement some choreographic elements are added, as well as solo parts for the choristers. The instrumentalist is expected to improvise parts of the music. The last movement, Solitude, is available as an off-print for SSAA and TTBB.

SKU: A0.1004797

Composed by Leslie Kleen. Contemporary. Octavo. 13 pages. Music From Riverside #4368548. Published by Music From Riverside (A0.1004797).

The life-affirming poem by Rabrindranath Tagore is set for men's chorus (TTBB) and piano.
The same stream of life that runs through my veins night and day runs through the whole world and dances in rhythmic measures.
It is the same life that shoots in joy through the dust of the earth in numberless blades of grass, and breaks into tumultuous waves of leaves and flowers.
It is the same life that is rocked in the ocean cradle of birth and death, of ebb and flow.
I feel my limbs are made glorious by the touch of this world of life.
And my pride is from the life-throb of ages dancing in my blood this moment..

2022 holds a significant milestone for my family. This year, my grandmother, Bobbie Kay Turner, celebrates her ninetieth birthday. In planning for the celebration, I was stumped about what to give her. I wanted it to be unique, something no one else would think of. Finally, I had the idea to compose a new song. I contacted my friend, James, and he was immediately on board. In fact, he had the first draft of a new poem back to me within the day!

When my grandmother (“Mimi†to her grandkids) was 36 years old, she and my grandfather moved to Cayman Brac, Cayman Islands with their six children to serve as missionaries; and she has been there since. So, when I think of Mimi, I can’t help but think of the many times I’ve sat and watched the ocean with her. Knowing this, James created a text that depicts life as a ship’s journey across the sea. Throughout the song, you will catch snippets of my grandmother’s favorite hymn Amazing Grace which, like Horizon, is a song about a journey.

My grandmother has lived a full, long life and continues to joyfully live each day. James’s beautiful lyrics perfectly capture her journey, particularly the final stanza. Mimi is known for being full of energy and abounding in love for those around her, and she never stops telling anyone who will listen about the divine light of an eternal home.

SKU: MQ.7720-E

Composed by David Conte. 9 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #7720-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.7720-E).

English.

Crossing the Bar creates images of the sea, with the final voyage leading us out across the water, to see our Pilot, face to face. The musical setting endeavors to express the growth from peaceful to ecstatic moods, the tolling of the bell, the meeting of the Pilot. May there be no moaning of the bar, when I put out to see.

The poetry of Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892) is characterized by dark, yet transcendent imagery -- the depths of the ocean, the triumph of the spirit. These poems seem well-suited to musical settings for Men's Chorus. The deep tones. The sonority of male voices (perhaps speaking for the poet) rising in song.

Throughout the varied imagery of this poetry -- the depth of the sea, the dark of the night, the tumult of passion and the acceptance of death -- there speaks one, central message. Love was my lord and king..
