“A Drop of Nelson’s Blood” (Roll the Old Chariot Along) is one of the most gruesome sea shanties that has evolved from shanty crew to shanty crew, and from pub to pub.  Its beginnings are suspect: Is this a variation of the African-American spiritual “The Golden Chariot” or is this a parody of a Salvation Army revivalist hymn?  The dilemma: How to get a dead man’s body back home while at sea. Why preserve his corpse in a barrel of rum!  This ‘concert’ setting of the shanty is scored for 4-part men’s chorus with piano accompaniment.  Performance time: 4:20+-.

African-American writer and civil rights activist James Weldon Johnson is perhaps best known as the author of Lift Every Voice and Sing, written on the occasion of Lincoln’s birthday and now known as the Black national anthem.  He established himself as a writer during the Harlem Renaissance (the African-American cultural movement in New York City in the 1920’s) for his poems, novels and anthologies. This poem Sence You Went Away creates the narrative of one who bemoans the loss of a loved one.  His bluesy poem features a southern dialect style.  It is written for 4-part male ensemble (TTBB) and is performed a capella. Performance time:2:00+  It is an apt introduction to Johnson’s work and most befitting for study during Black History month.

“My Patie is a Lover Gay” was written by the Scottish poet Allan Ramsay as the Finale for his ballad opera The Gentle Shepherd (1725).  As was the custom of ballad opera at that time, he suggested his lyrics were to be sung to the well-known Scottish-English tune “Corn Riggs are Happy” (aka ‘Corn Riggs are Bonny’).  In the spirit of PRIDE month, and updating the setting to the context of now, this is a love song about a shepherd and his lover.  It is arranged for 4-part (gay or inclusive) men’s chorus to be performed a cappella.  Performance time: 2:55+-.

“Red Right Hand�, by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds was released in 1994. It is a modern-day adult gothic Halloween-type tale, inspired by English poet John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, where the ‘red right hand strikes vengeance on the demon Belial’. This tune found its way to the Scream film series and serves as the theme song for the BBC series Peaky Blinders. This arrangement is scored for 4-part men’s TTBB ensemble with piano accompaniment.
