I’ve always been interested in Baba O’Riley; it always felt like a combination of Disney’s Electric Light Parade, minimalism, and rock. Take what you want (as to the story) behind this piece - you cannot deny that the title refers to Maher Baba and Terry O’Riley - a combination of Indian spiritualism and musical minimalism. The main melody is there. The voices bounce around with short vocalises/ostinatos to simulate a synth. The piano also becomes integral to the iconic chord progression. This version helps to use what the choir is excellent for - dynamic and textural contrasts while delivering a familiar tune. Enjoy this interactive rendition of Baba O'Riley!

'Break My Soul' was the first single from 'Renaissance', Beyoncé's triumphant 7th album, which re-established her as one of the most influential and commercially successful artists of her generation. The textures of the single version are derivative of '90s house music, and the vocal textures and voicings are uniquely Beyoncé, while gospel-tinged in places. That said, the story of the song could not be more contemporary to the 2020s, referencing social division, the exploitation of gig workers and, of course, race.  Its empowering, defiant yet joyous lyric makes the song perfect for any concert closer. This TTBB arrangement sticks to the complex phrasing and rhythmic complexity of the Beyoncé vocal, with some simplifications for choral use. Intended as a spectacular finale with dancers and live band, it also features some elements from her live touring version, and includes a solo part that would suit an MC, and/or and singer versed in Beyoncé's vocal stylings. The text is thought to be loosely based on his conversion to Christianity. One of the most common tunes to be associate with the text is Restoration, sometimes known as Arise. This pentatonic tune comes from the Southern Harmony collection. This a cappella arrangement by Mark Lewis passes the melody between all four voice parts with key changes that place the melody nicely within every vocal range. Alternating between arpeggiating and homophonic accompaniment, this arrangement provides a wide variety of singing experiences for the choir over the course of the song.

The text starts out with the singer feeling lost, alone, and in pain. As the song progresses, the singer remembers God’s promises to always help and be with us. By the end of the song, the singer has regained hope and is triumphant and comforted. First and foremost, the music is very much intended to support the lyrical content of this song.Throughout the song, the key switches from major to minor (both parallel and relative) quite frequently. The piece starts with a very free section with almost no tempo alternating between just voices and simple piano accompaniment. The middle sections have stricter tempo and more active piano accompaniment and the final section increases in speed and excitement with piano truly accompanying the voices instead of just mostly mirroring them. Throughout the piece, meter always follows word stress so there are a surprising number of time signature changes with lyrical clarity always being more important than strict meter. All that said, the rhythms are not too difficult throughout the song and while there are some dissonant harmonies, the musical lines themselves should be singable by most intermediate choirs. The most challenging voice part is probably the tenor 1 line which spends a lot of time in the higher ranges. There are a few optional parts for the tenor 1s that will truly test the range of the singers.
