This setting of Lawrence Raab's poem 'Voices Answering Back: The Vampires' was commissioned and first performed by Coastal Voices Men's Choir, under the direction of Janet Gaskin.  Approximate duration: 7 minutes.   The text is used by permission of the poet.   Coastal Voices is an unauditioned but very hard-working choir; my commission was to write a work which would be challenging, but feasible for them, and they responded splendidly to the occasion. I made MIDI soundfiles of the individual parts for the singers to rehearse with, and I would be happy to provide these to choirs who plan to perform the work. Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel)     This absolutely gorgeous song was written by Billy Joel in response, I believe, to his young daughter asking him what happens when people die and, as he didn’t believe in the afterlife, he was trying to avoid answering her.   I was asked to arrange this as a duet with a cello and a ‘smattering of (SSA) choir.’  As I was listening to recordings of this song, a second voice emerged for me, possibly someone who has passed on, calmly lulling the child to sleep whilst her father is trying to distract her from her questions. This was indeed the interpretation felt by people I played it to who found it very moving.   This version has been reformatted for male voices, so duet, cello, smattering of TTBB.   I hope you enjoy it.   Included in this pack are a full score, vocal score and cello part with what I hope are useful cues for you to navigate your way around the piece.   Other formats will be available shortly with more choir involvement and for those without access to a cello.     Formats available Duet, cello, SSA Duet, cello, TTBB

It tells about an Australian Vietnam veteran trying to deal with his return to civilian life – womanising, post traumatic stress disorder, drug addiction, working on oil rigs and flying helicopters, travelling the world in search of answers. It is a life, he says, that only other vets (veterans) would understand.Released in May 1978, the song achieved only modest success on the national charts at the time, but did reach No. 4 in Cold Chisel's home town of Adelaide. In 2001, APRA, the Australasian music industry's peak body, listed Khe Sanh at number eight in a poll of all-time best Australian songs.
