TTBB divisi chorus - Digital Download SKU: BJ.1351 Composed by Henrik Dahlgren. Secular. Octavo. 12 pages. Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital #1351. Published by Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital (BJ.1351). 8.27 x 11.7 inches. In 2017, I was commissioned by the Svanholm Singers to write a work for inclusion in a concert marking 70 years since the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Choosing a text was difficult. I came across upon a poem by American poet Maya Angelou, but it struck me as being too powerful and emotional for the music I was writing to carry it; everything I composed sounded banal next to Angelou's words. I soon realized that I could use silence to enhance the text, rather than heaping layers and layers of music upon it. Silence is both terrifying and serious - in a sense, it is the only adequate counterpoint to the poetry. So, I decided to build the piece on silence. Though the beginning of the piece is the opposite of silence - a scream of desperation - I followed that outburst by cutting the poem's stanzas into single words, repeated in a different order each time, almost in the manner of a mantra. Finally, they end up in the right order and suddenly the words take on their rightful meaning. I hope, in this way, the music is equally powerful as the words. Son to Mother has been well-received and has gone on to become one of the most widely performed pieces I have written. It has been performed at various festivals and in various countries, including Taiwan, France and China - where it only just made it past the government censors. Also available for mixed choir.Henrik Dahlgren is a Swedish composer, born 1991. TTBB choir (a cappella) - Digital Download SKU: MQ.7720-E Composed by David Conte. 9 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #7720-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.7720-E). English.Crossing the Bar creates images of the sea, with the final voyage leading us out across the water, to see our Pilot, face to face. The musical setting endeavors to express the growth from peaceful to ecstatic moods, the tolling of the bell, the meeting of the Pilot. May there be no moaning of the bar, when I put out to see.The poetry of Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892) is characterized by dark, yet transcendent imagery -- the depths of the ocean, the triumph of the spirit. These poems seem well-suited to musical settings for Men's Chorus. The deep tones. The sonority of male voices (perhaps speaking for the poet) rising in song.Throughout the varied imagery of this poetry -- the depth of the sea, the dark of the night, the tumult of passion and the acceptance of death -- there speaks one, central message. Love was my lord and king..

Choral Choir (TTBB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1031323 Composed by John Plant. 20th Century,Contemporary,Halloween. Octavo. 26 pages. JWP Music #3108015. Published by JWP Music (A0.1031323). This setting of Lawrence Raab's poem 'Voices Answering Back: The Vampires' was commissioned and first performed by Coastal Voices Men's Choir, under the direction of Janet Gaskin.  Approximate duration: 7 minutes.   The text is used by permission of the poet.   Coastal Voices is an unauditioned but very hard-working choir; my commission was to write a work which would be challenging, but feasible for them, and they responded splendidly to the occasion. I made MIDI soundfiles of the individual parts for the singers to rehearse with, and I would be happy to provide these to choirs who plan to perform the work. Voices Answering Back requires a skilled pianist.  You can reach me through my website at www.johnplantmusic.com.  My performing rights organization is SOCAN. Please note: 2017 Choral Contest Entry.

TTBB choir (a cappella) - Digital Download SKU: MQ.4995-E Composed by Frank Ferko. 12 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #4995-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.4995-E). The Hildegard Motets comprise a cycle of nine unaccompanied choral motets using texts by the 12th century abbess Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179). The texts were extracted from Hildegard's opus of more than seventy sacred poems titled Symphinia armonie celestium revelationum. Although these poems have been translated into English (more than once) and some of the translations are quite brilliant, I chose to set the original Latin texts as I felt they remained closer to Hildegard's own thoughts. The nine poems used in this cycle were selected according to their appropriateness to seasons in the Christian liturgical caldendar (thus, most of them can be sung in specific liturgical settings) and to their appropriateness to the structured plan of this cycle as well as for their sheer poetic beauty. Hildegard's poetic vocabulary was unusual and unique; she frequently used language that is not found in standard Latin liturgical texts. As with the music she composed, her poetry is highly ecstatic, vivid and rich in imagery.

I immediately knew that I wanted strings and celeste to serve as my 'heavenly' accompaniment; but what text should I choose? After immersing myself in poetry, I whittled it down to three that sang to me: Creator of the Universe, a Plato translation; We Are the Stars, an Algonquin Native-American poem; and (I couldn’t resist) Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.

Choral Choir (TTBB) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.942885 Composed by James W. Knox. Contemporary. Octavo. 21 pages. Knox Music #6383215. Published by Knox Music (A0.942885). THE PARTING BEFORE THE BATTLE was written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) an Irish writer, poet and lyricist celebrated for his Irish Melodies. He is best remembered for the lyrics of The Minstrel Boy and The Last Rose of Summer and one of the first recognized champions of freedom in Ireland. As an impressionable young man with a quick Irish temper, the execution of a close college friend during the United Irishmen's Rebellion aroused in Moore a patriotic fervor that provided his greatest literary inspiration. Thomas Moore's best known work included a brilliant biographical masterpiece taken from the confidential memoirs of Lord Byron. His own Memoirs, Journal, and Correspondence are an invaluable social record of life in England and Ireland during the first half of the nineteenth century. James W. Knox, composer, depicts a battle of the brave Irish men and women who have courageously fought against those who seek destruction. The chorus should sing with great boldness and display a sense of honorable pride. To create a dramatic affect, James also used Erse or Gaelic with an ancient proverb, Ní neart go cur le chéile. (There is no strength without unity.) This text is used throughout the piece in addition to the poem. The proverb is set to the melody of Dies irae , which is a famous Gregorian chant dating back to the 13th century and is found as part of the Latin sequence in the Requiem. .

Choral Choir,Choral,TTBB Chorus - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1459447 Composed by Traditional 17th century Scottish tune/Allan Ramsay. Arranged by Scott S. Stewart. A Cappella,Celtic,Classical,Irish,Traditional. 6 pages. Scott S. Stewart #1038399. Published by Scott S. Stewart (A0.1459447). “My Patie is a Lover Gay” was written by the Scottish poet Allan Ramsay as the Finale for his ballad opera The Gentle Shepherd (1725).  As was the custom of ballad opera at that time, he suggested his lyrics were to be sung to the well-known Scottish-English tune “Corn Riggs are Happy” (aka ‘Corn Riggs are Bonny’).  In the spirit of PRIDE month, and updating the setting to the context of now, this is a love song about a shepherd and his lover.  It is arranged for 4-part (gay or inclusive) men’s chorus to be performed a cappella.  Performance time: 2:55+-.
