SKU: A0.928974

By The Beach Boys. By Brian Wilson and Gary Usher. Arranged by Donald A. Mills, 2019. A Cappella,Pop,Rock. Octavo. 3 pages. Donald A Mills #4351149. Published by Donald A Mills (A0.928974).

In My Room, by The Beach Boys.

This gentle song may be sung as a prayer, with tenderness. Your audiences will love the melody and harmonies.

This arrangement by Donald A. Mills is for barbershop as a quartet or chorus. It is TTBB (TLBB) a cappella, sung softly, sweetly, legato, singing the four dotted quarter notes as a 3/4 time. The Beach Boys have mentioned that they wrote In My Room in 12/8 time because they had tired of the 3/4 time many songs of the day were written in.

From Wikipedia, Gary Usher explained that 'In My Room found us taking our craft a little more seriously. Brian and I came back to the house one night after playing 'over-the-line' (a baseball game). I played bass and Brian was on organ. The song was written in an hour... Brian's melody all the way. The sensitivity... the concept meant a lot to him. When we finished, it was late, after our midnight curfew. In fact, Murry [the Wilson brothers' father] came in a couple of times and wanted me to leave. Anyway, we got Audree [the Wilson brothers' mother], who was putting her hair up before bed, and we played it for her. She said, 'That's the most beautiful song you've ever written.' Murry said, 'Not bad, Usher, not bad,' which was the nicest thing he ever said to me.

Gary Usher (who co-wrote the lyrics with Brian Wilson) further describes that Brian was always saying that his room was his whole world. Brian seconds this opinion: I had a room, and I thought of it as my kingdom. And I wrote that song, very definitely, that you're not afraid when you're in your room. It's absolutely true.

In 1990, Brian wrote, I also enjoyed producing 'In My Room'. There is a story behind this song. When Dennis, Carl and I lived in Hawthorne as kids, we all slept in the same room. One night I sang the song 'Ivory Tower' to them and they liked it. Then a couple of weeks later, I proceeded to teach them both how to sing the harmony parts to it. It took them a little while, but they finally learned it. We then sang this song night after night. It brought peace to us. When we recorded 'In My Room', there was just Dennis, Carl and me on the first verse...and we sounded just like we did in our bedroom all those nights. This story has more meaning than ever since Dennis' death.

In 2002, I was commissioned by the Turtle Creek Chorale to compose a three-movement star-themed piece for their upcoming 'celestial' concert. I immediately knew that I wanted strings and celeste to serve as my 'heavenly' accompaniment; but what text should I choose? After immersing myself in poetry, I whittled it down to three that sang to me: Creator of the Universe, a Plato translation; We Are the Stars, an Algonquin Native-American poem; and (I couldnā€™t resist) Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.

2022 holds a significant milestone for my family. This year, my grandmother, Bobbie Kay Turner, celebrates her ninetieth birthday. In planning for the celebration, I was stumped about what to give her. I wanted it to be unique, something no one else would think of. Finally, I had the idea to compose a new song. I contacted my friend, James, and he was immediately on board. In fact, he had the first draft of a new poem back to me within the day!Ā
Ā
When my grandmother (ā€œMimiā€ to her grandkids) was 36 years old, she and my grandfather moved to Cayman Brac, Cayman Islands with their six children to serve as missionaries; and she has been there since. So, when I think of Mimi, I canā€™t help but think of the many times Iā€™ve sat and watched the ocean with her. Knowing this, James created a text that depicts life as a shipā€™s journey across the sea. Throughout the song, you will catch snippets of my grandmotherā€™s favorite hymn Amazing Grace which, like Horizon, is a song about a journey.
Ā
My grandmother has lived a full, long life and continues to joyfully live each day. Jamesā€™s beautiful lyrics perfectly capture her journey, particularly the final stanza. Mimi is known for being full of energy and abounding in love for those around her, and she never stops telling anyone who will listen about the divine light of an eternal home.

Composed by Phil Beaman. 20th Century,Multicultural,New Age,World. Octavo. 1 pages. Phil Beaman #3387107. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844467).

Many years ago I was on a judging panel to select winning song entries to mark the United Nations World Peace Celebration. I remember being quite disappointed in the majority of entries because the lyrics proceeded to list all the current world conflicts and their proposed solutions. It made for overly long, and ultimately boring, songs. I was haunted by those entries when I went home that night. I lied in bed and thought all I wanted to hear was.... Finally, at a sleepless 2 a.m., I got up and went to the piano and wrote this piece as a response to that. (That line from my tortured dream; all I ever wanted even made it into the song.).   I set it for TTBB voices to provide a closer, tighter harmony to indicate the brotherhood I was dreaming of. Its simplicity and extreme brevity are no doubt knee jerk reactions to the long, boring pieces I heard all day. This piece has been in my drawer for two decades because I thought it was too brief to be of any practical value for anyone, but all attempts I made to lengthen it seemed to spoil it. But it remains one of my favorite and most passionate pieces that I have written, so I have decided to post it 'as is' and let you creative types decide how to use it. Enjoy!. (recording is a simple piano reduction of the voice parts to show harmonies and progressions)

By Jimmy Perry. By Jimmy Perry. Arranged by Liz Garnett. Barbershop,Film/TV. 6 pages. Liz Garnett #883547. Published by Liz Garnett (A0.1292944).

This song was the theme tune for a classic 1970s sitcom, and is begging to be arranged in the barbershop style. This arrangement was written for a particular performance occasion, and thus builds the original song out into a somewhat longer form (and with a few quirks of lyric underlap related to that occasion), so if you wanted to sing only the length as it appeared on TV, you can cut from bar 40 straight to bar 91.

Vocal ranges:
Tenor: B4 - B5
Lead: D3 - G4
Bari: D3 - F4
Bass: G2 - B flat 3
