Stewart (A0.1459447). “My Patie is a Lover Gay” was written by the Scottish poet Allan Ramsay as the Finale for his ballad opera The Gentle Shepherd (1725).  As was the custom of ballad opera at that time, he suggested his lyrics were to be sung to the well-known Scottish-English tune “Corn Riggs are Happy” (aka ‘Corn Riggs are Bonny’).  In the spirit of PRIDE month, and updating the setting to the context of now, this is a love song about a shepherd and his lover.  It is arranged for 4-part (gay or inclusive) men’s chorus to be performed a cappella.  Performance time: 2:55+-.

The piece opens with a haunting evocation of the darkness and cruelty of unjust incarceration; a rhythmic middle section portrays the prisoner's stubborn refusal to lose hope and human dignity, whatever obstacles and punishments must be overcome. The final, maestoso section is a rousing hymn, a joyful celebration of determination to remain true to one's beliefs and ideals, and pride in being the master of one's own fate.Audiences will appreciate the variety of moods and tempos within the piece; ending on a huge emotional high makes it the perfect number to end a performance. THE PARTING BEFORE THE BATTLE was written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) an Irish writer, poet and lyricist celebrated for his Irish Melodies. He is best remembered for the lyrics of The Minstrel Boy and The Last Rose of Summer and one of the first recognized champions of freedom in Ireland. As an impressionable young man with a quick Irish temper, the execution of a close college friend during the United Irishmen's Rebellion aroused in Moore a patriotic fervor that provided his greatest literary inspiration. Thomas Moore's best known work included a brilliant biographical masterpiece taken from the confidential memoirs of Lord Byron. His own Memoirs, Journal, and Correspondence are an invaluable social record of life in England and Ireland during the first half of the nineteenth century. James W. Knox, composer, depicts a battle of the brave Irish men and women who have courageously fought against those who seek destruction. The chorus should sing with great boldness and display a sense of honorable pride. To create a dramatic affect, James also used Erse or Gaelic with an ancient proverb, Ní neart go cur le chéile. (There is no strength without unity.) This text is used throughout the piece in addition to the poem. The proverb is set to the melody of Dies irae , which is a famous Gregorian chant dating back to the 13th century and is found as part of the Latin sequence in the Requiem. .

The half time reggae in the middle 8 leads to a defiant unison section where the entire ensemble declares ‘They can’t be believe that we love one another’. This leads to a final explosion of joy. Especially infectious, this tune demands audience participation and choir movement of some kind.The song itself is relatively repetitive and builds in energy with every return of the main chorus. It is vocally demanding and high energy throughout, demanding some vocal stamina and knowledge of Trinidad pronunciation. It could also be an opportunity to learn about the history and practice of carnival across the world, both as celebration of individuality and also as fighting oppression.
