There are three  violin parts, three viola, three cello and two bass together with timps, a bass drum and cymbals. There is also a piano part for rehearsal purposes but which may also be used in performance. The string parts range from elementary to advanced to give the very young players experience in an orchestral environment. Hall of the Mountain King starts very softly with the lower string pizzicato and ends with a crashing climax.
