Asian Symmetries                                                                      by Dan Heslink

Asian Symmetries is a fanciful work which draws loosely from the musical procedures and sonic preferences of Indonesian and other Asian musical styles.  It is scored for three percussionists, each with their own battery of instruments. Gamelan-like impressions might be inferred from the cyclical nature of its rhythm, using metal plates like cymbals and gongs to mark large units of rhythmic time. Also evocative are the faster moving elaborations and a preponderance of metallophones in the instrumentation.

 

The work is medium to difficult in its demands. There are quick changes of instrument, planned to be manageable but requiring some attention to logistics  Each player’s performance station must remain stationary, with all instruments in reach without moving the performer’s position. Percussion I and Percussion III players must set up next to each other so that they may share the tenor drum. A selection of mallets that allows different striking surfaces to sound good without undue picking up and setting down of mallets is suggested.

 

Changes of meter and tempo occur, and an odd meter section sporting measures in 12/8, 6/8, 11/8 may require some additional attention. I wrote this piece for one of my school percussion ensembles trying to fill a gap in percussion ensemble drumming pieces. In my search for great pieces, some were too hard, others too easy. So, I decided to write my own.

The piece draws inspiration from funk and R&B drumming and as always, the aim is that the ensemble has fun and enjoys the groove. Coming from a long background of Latin and African drumming styles, my compositions place a heavy emphasis on feeling the rhythm and hearing all the parts lock in, rather than being accurate.

Written for the FCIP Senior percussion ensemble 2021, this piece for 12 players draws inspiration from the many cultures that surround the Straits of Gibraltar. The fusion of ethnicities and trade that surround one stretch of water inspires images of belly dancing in a middle eastern bazaar, staring at the ocean from the coast and travelling into the wonders of the desert. Straits of Gibraltar is for Intermediate/Advanced percussion ensembles with access to 2x4.3 Octave Marimbas, 2x Vibraphones, Xylophone, Glockenspiel/Bells, Timpani, Concert toms, Darbuka or Djembe, Drum Set and Auxiliary Percussion.

The Man Who Laughs is a musical portrait of Batman’s greatest adversary, the Joker (Detective Comics). This piece draws inspiration from both comic book sources and live-action performances on film and television. It features five continuous sections:

One Bad Day: (Page 1) A prelude showcasing a lush melodic theme that ascribes the derangement of a normal man to the dramatic events of one bad day.

How I Got These Scars: (Page 10) Introduces additional thematic material at a frantically energized pace to contrive an identity from a mind fragmented by hitting rock bottom.

Why So Serious: (Page 17) Punctuates the Joker’s aggressive resolutions with a reoccurring two note motif.

A Dance with the Devil: (Page 33) A fleshed-out unity of previous materials in a romantic waltz-like style.

Giggling in a Corner and Bleeding: (Page 47) A dynamic and provocative bout of hysteria that challenges the speed and dexterity of a player in the same way the Joker challenges the ideological resolve of Batman. By the end of this section, the audience might feel like they have been attacked by the Joker, influenced by him, or may have actually been the Joker all along.

The piece also draws inspiration from funk and Taiko drumming. It also pays homage to the great percussion composer Kevin Tuck and his piece Summon the Spirits, who has created drumming pieces that are the staple of percussion music all around the world.

Volcano Rising is a percussion ensemble drumming piece for 12 drummers. It draws inspiration from The Blue Man Group and aims to challenge the perception of sound. It is recommended that the piece be performed in a circle surrounding the audience or in a line to enhance the effects used.

The composition works with and without the visual effect and focuses on groovy polyrhythms and moving lines across the parts. It is a challenging piece for every level of ensemble.

The Siege of Busanjin was a battle fought at Busan between Japanese and Korean forces on April 14, 1592.
Japanese forces surrounded the fort of Busan and within hours the Korean fort was decimated.

This piece for drumming ensemble embodies the brutality and power of the Siege of Busanjin and draws inspiration from traditional Taiko drumming ensembles. Driving rhythms and large movements combine with extreme rhythmic precision to bring an enormous piece for drumming ensemble.

Chicken and a Biscuit is a phrase used as a teaching tool for one of the most common drum fills in funk and reggae music. The piece draws inspiration from traditional drumming styles such as Samba and West African Djembe drumming. It also pays homage to great percussion composers, John Parker and Tania Savage, who have created drumming pieces that are the staple of high school percussion music in Brisbane, Australia.

As always, the aim is that the ensemble has fun and enjoys the groove. Coming from a long background of Latin and African drumming styles, the piece was written with heavy emphasis on feeling the rhythm and hearing all the parts lock in.

This piece explores the idea that ensembles are the sum of their parts. Each player wielding 1 stick and 1 bell or block, the piece draws inspiration from improvised grooves and jams across different styles of music.

Musicians are encouraged to choreograph the piece or substitute the instrumentation with different auxiliary instruments or a choice of similarly pitched novelty instruments e.g. Pots and pans.

'Groovy Groove Groove' was written for SoundStruck’s performance at the 2016 Australian Percussion Gathering. The piece is built around Brazilian rhythms and draws inspiration from a type of samba called ‘partido alto’.

Performers can arrange the piece in whatever way they like, deciding the form, instrumentation and also adding parts and instruments.
