Composed by Anders Wall. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 23 pages. WallofSound #3374791. Published by WallofSound (A0.1028124).

En Rêve, In Dream, was conceived when I studied composition for Tobias Broström.

Every day I was commuting from Skurup to BaÌŠstad and every day I was struck by BaÌŠstads almost continental beauty; I felt like I was in France.  Cobble stone roads, houses with towers and that mountain ridge close to the ocean...

One day on the train, I ran into three French girls on holiday.
Patiently they listened to my ideas and kindly helped me translate the tempo markings to French.

The piece begins with us falling to sleep. The marimbas rocks us slowly In Dream.
After sudden movements in the vibraphone we are happily strolling on the cobble stones, sun shining and children riding their bikes across the streets not noticing the rocky ride.
Bells chime in the distance and the world – or the dream – vanish.

As sudden as it started it is gone.
The dissonance of the beginning is now gone and our sleep is peaceful and calm - or is it..?

Originally a solo piece for Marimba dedicated to Kasper Grøn.
Thanks to Camille, Carole, Raphaëlle for the help with the French.

In collaboration with the Philadelphia Classical Symphony and

director, Karl Middleman and Partners in Distance Learning, a music composition project was launched in 2005 for students in Pennsylvania. I created an instructional web site called HOW TO WRITE A FANFARE. Students from around the state worked through the program and sent us their final projects. The committee selected the best ones submitted and we brought the students and their families to Philadelphia where the Philadelphia Classical Symphony performed their pieces on a public concert. The web site is still on line and the student's pieces can be heard. at: http://tozier.net/dberlin/fanfare/index.htm/

Please feel free to use this website in conjunction with my printed score and recording for yourself, students or your circle of friends.

This score and recording was my contribution to the concert.  It is 90 seconds long at 120 BPM.

Composed by Luke Henson. Jazz,Pop,World. Score and parts. 42 pages. Luke Henson #3866911. Published by Luke Henson (A0.942610).

This great steelband composition, inspired by the music of Andy and Jeff Narell, will leave any audience humming and tapping their feet! It begins with a simple, yet infectious, bass and cello groove which gradually builds up to include the entire band. The intro then shifts into a catchy, laid-back verse, a call-and-response chorus, and a solo section. An intense bridge brings us right back to the original melody, followed by a satisfying outro. It would make a great recording and performance piece or any advanced steelpan ensemble.

Notes

This work was commissioned by Extremadura Orchestra for Percussion and Chamber orchestra.
It has two movements. The first one has been done for mallets and the second one was built on a base of a drums work (GEA).
The duration of those movements is 26 minutes, being around 11 minutes the first and 15 minutes the second one.
The chamber music is formed by:
Woodwind quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn & Bassoon)
Brasswind quintet (Trumpet 1, Trumpet 2, Horn, Trombone & Tuba)
Strings orchestra
Three firsts violins
Three seconds violins
Three violas
Two cellos

For the second movement is high recommendable to enlarge the strings, a good number of musician could be doubling.

I. Strong Forces

The work is inspired by the four fundamental forces of nature. These forces explain any phenomena which can be produced in the universe.

Throughout all composition, it is latent the mathematic construction based in the series Fibonacci. In the first of the movements, Fibonacci's series is present in the notes' sequence that forms the series of 16 sounds and it is going to be present throughout the whole work. This series is taking form along the movement and it is getting melody and harmony.

Although it is far away from the sonata form, as we know it in its period of highest glory, it takes elements of it and updates to our days. In this movement, we can find sonata form elements as the exposition, development, transitions or coda.

The central part of the first movement becomes in the slow movement, being more intimate and lyrical, free of the serials ties although it uses resources before cited -now called common practice-.

The movement finish with a short re-exposition that concludes with the virtuosic of the soloist doubling the series and adding more tension until conforming the series in its full whole.

II. Weak Forces

It is the most tribal of both movements. Its structure is more complex and in it, we also can find clear reminiscences to the sonata form.

We can divide the movement into two big blocks. The first one is formed for the introduction and sections one and two.

Introducción

It is based in one ostinato of three notes where the accent is changing provoking unsymmetric, this ostinato represents the nucleus of our existence. The piccolo and the trombone introduce us to the human element representing the two elements that form the development of the whole movement.

The two elements of thematics are taken from the series, the first one is easily recognizable because it appears in his primary form.

First section & cadenza

In this movement, the rhythm, the melody, and the harmony are based on the sequence of Fibonacci. As the theme ostinato of the soloist as the melody is formed under the rhythm of 1, 2, 3 and 5. This section leads us to the second section with a clear mode of cadence. In the cadenza, the elements of the rhythm are varied freely with an accompaniment of the Spring Drum.

Development

It is formed by two Rondo sub-sections in which the solo part has been created through the mirror technique.

Both sections have the next form:

Intro-A-B-A-B-(B(minor)+A)

Intro-A-B-A-B-(B(major)+A)

First section & Coda

The movement ends with the repetition of the first section and the final code.

By Joan Lithgow. By Antonio Vivaldi. Arranged by Joan Lithgow. Baroque,Children,Contemporary,Multicultural,World. 12 pages. Joan Lithgow Music #886140. Published by Joan Lithgow Music (A0.1295814).

This piece is ideally suited for the Marimba Workshop (Pty) Ltd marimbas.
www.marimbaworkshop.co.za

It was arranged for the Goede Hoop Marimba Band to be performed at the 2016 Education Africa International Marimba & Steelpan Festival in the Strictly Classical Category where the composer for this category for that year was Antonio Vivaldi. This performance has gone viral on YouTube.  These young girls were aged between 11 and 13 at the time.

It is written for African diatonic marimbas in C with an African feel but can be played on a variety of different instruments.

Feel free to roll (measured or unmeasured) on the long notes.

Whenever I teach this arrangement my students fall in love with Vivaldi and his music. The medley consists of music from Vivaldi's Four Seasons: Spring and Winter and his famous Gloria. There is a joy and wonder as the harmonies and patterns are revealed to them through my unique methodology I use to teach them.

I hope you have fun learning this arrangement.

I would love to hear your version of this piece. Please email:  joan@marimbaworkshop.co.za.

Composed by Joshua Hauser. Instructional. Score and parts. 38 pages. Slide Ride #5288673. Published by Slide Ride (A0.784338).

1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instruments

If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake!

The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!

I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.

As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.

·     Choose a tempo.

·     Choose a dynamic.

·     Choose an articulation/style.

One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.

Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.

If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.

The variations are endless!

If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.

All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!

Enjoy!

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Yvonne Johnson. Children,Folk,Instructional,Traditional. Score and parts. 11 pages. Yvonne Johnson #647843. Published by Yvonne Johnson (A0.1043133).

Score and Full Set of 7 Parts This well known tune has been arranged in 7 parts for the younger Orff performers. The tune is played twice through with Sop Glock and Alto Met both playing the melody and Alto Glock providing the harmony. The Bass Xylo provides a simple bass line for the first verse with the variation for the second verse giving the arrangement a sense of motion. Marimba or Bass Met could be substituted for the Bass Xylo. Sop Xylo and Alto Xylo parts both have glissandi, with Alto Xylo playing the glissandi in the first verse and Sop Xylo playing the glissandi in the second verse. The simple rhythmic beat of the Tambourine part helps convey the motion of the bus wheels. Tempo and dynamic markings are suggested ones only.

Silent Night Prelude for Percussion Octet                      arr. by Dan Heslink

This work is based on the well-loved Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber. This theme is so popular that it was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011. And the version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935 is the fourth best-selling single recording of all-time. It’s sure to motivate your audience close to Christmas.

The Prelude begins with a brisk tempo. Although notated in 3, as is customary in more modern renditions (the original theme was notated in 6), the tempo must be fast enough that two measures of 3 create a binary pairing (like 6/4 in two). It may be necessary to slightly slow down the roll speed to avoid a frenetic sound.  The difficulty level is easy. There are no changes of key, and the timpani part requires only two drums (Bb, F) with no tuning changes. The vibe part could be played with two mallets, but might execute more comfortably with three. The other keyboard parts use only two mallets each.

The expression of this beautiful tune will be greatly enhanced by exaggerating the contrasts of dynamics. Accompaniment and ornamental figures must at all times be sublimated to the familiar theme. At the last strain, players should sing the well-known words in order to lead the audience or congregation in group singing. It would be helpful for the conductor to turn and face the audience at this point. This closing passage may be repeated for any number of sung verses.

Use a smooth, relaxed stroke to elicit as much legato as possible. At points a continuous arpeggio accompaniment is divided among the instruments. Care must be taken to keep the sixteenth note speed consistent. The opening runs should be performed half-pedal on the vibes for clarity.

Prelude on Silent Night would serve equally well in recital or in a church service. Duration is 3:10. The arranger, Dan Heslink, can be contacted at dan@dheslink.com
