1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instruments

If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake!

The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!

I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.

As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.

·     Choose a tempo.

·     Choose a dynamic.

·     Choose an articulation/style.

One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.

Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.

If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.

The variations are endless!

If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.

All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!

Enjoy!

By Soundgarden. By Chris Cornell. Arranged by David R. Peoples. Classical,Contemporary,Grunge,Rock. 68 pages. Bluesilhouettes Music #930151. Published by Bluesilhouettes Music (A0.1345315).

What I really like about this song is its uniqueness... is it grunge? Psychedelic? Alternative? Hard Rock? Contemporary chamber music? Theoretically - is it some sort of jazz-fuzed harmonic progression or a clever soundscape of melody notes outside of chords?

This version is not a cover. Fragments of musical elements are translated into the ensemble. While occasionally exhibiting moments of rock, the composition evolves into a more profound expression, capitalizing on the musical possibilities of a percussion ensemble. This arrangement was crafted for the University of North Georgia’s percussion ensemble, directed by Dr. Steven Walker.

Notes

This work was commissioned by Extremadura Orchestra for Percussion and Chamber orchestra.
It has two movements. The first one has been done for mallets and the second one was built on a base of a drums work (GEA).
The duration of those movements is 26 minutes, being around 11 minutes the first and 15 minutes the second one.
The chamber music is formed by:
Woodwind quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn & Bassoon)
Brasswind quintet (Trumpet 1, Trumpet 2, Horn, Trombone & Tuba)
Strings orchestra
Three firsts violins
Three seconds violins
Three violas
Two cellos

For the second movement is high recommendable to enlarge the strings, a good number of musician could be doubling.

I. Strong Forces

The work is inspired by the four fundamental forces of nature. These forces explain any phenomena which can be produced in the universe.

Throughout all composition, it is latent the mathematic construction based in the series Fibonacci. In the first of the movements, Fibonacci's series is present in the notes' sequence that forms the series of 16 sounds and it is going to be present throughout the whole work. This series is taking form along the movement and it is getting melody and harmony.

Although it is far away from the sonata form, as we know it in its period of highest glory, it takes elements of it and updates to our days. In this movement, we can find sonata form elements as the exposition, development, transitions or coda.

The central part of the first movement becomes in the slow movement, being more intimate and lyrical, free of the serials ties although it uses resources before cited -now called common practice-.

The movement finish with a short re-exposition that concludes with the virtuosic of the soloist doubling the series and adding more tension until conforming the series in its full whole.

II. Weak Forces

It is the most tribal of both movements. Its structure is more complex and in it, we also can find clear reminiscences to the sonata form.

We can divide the movement into two big blocks. The first one is formed for the introduction and sections one and two.

Introducción

It is based in one ostinato of three notes where the accent is changing provoking unsymmetric, this ostinato represents the nucleus of our existence. The piccolo and the trombone introduce us to the human element representing the two elements that form the development of the whole movement.

The two elements of thematics are taken from the series, the first one is easily recognizable because it appears in his primary form.

First section & cadenza

In this movement, the rhythm, the melody, and the harmony are based on the sequence of Fibonacci. As the theme ostinato of the soloist as the melody is formed under the rhythm of 1, 2, 3 and 5. This section leads us to the second section with a clear mode of cadence. In the cadenza, the elements of the rhythm are varied freely with an accompaniment of the Spring Drum.

Development

It is formed by two Rondo sub-sections in which the solo part has been created through the mirror technique.

Both sections have the next form:

Intro-A-B-A-B-(B(minor)+A)

Intro-A-B-A-B-(B(major)+A)

First section & Coda

The movement ends with the repetition of the first section and the final code.

I wanted to create an ethereal piece. This composition is completely made up of whole notes with the exception of where a glissando appears. I wanted to make sure the glissando did not occur until the end of the measure. The composition is in 4/4. Try to ensure a smooth performance with no gaps. Arrangement of the 1978 hit single, by German / Caribbean Euro-Disco group Boney M. Taken from their third album Nightflight to Venus, the song was released in August of 1978 and reached No.1 in 5 countries, and peaked at No.2 in the UK.

A cover of the song was released in 2007, by Finnish Folk Metal band Turisas. After years of playing it as part of their live shows, they decided to put it to record as a special edition EP in the wake of the success of their second full length album.

KEY: G Minor

DIFFICULTY: Intermediate
The piece makes use of several repeated rhythmic motifs, so once familiarised it is relatively easy to master. In a couple of spots their are short solo passages, but on the whole instruments work together in their subsections and are little exposed.

Composed by Franz von Suppe. Arranged by Flávio Régis Cunha. Concert,Opera,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 16 pages. Flavio Regis Cunha #4593577. Published by Flavio Regis Cunha (A0.597222).

Die schöne Galathée (The Beautiful Galatea) is an operetta in two acts by Franz von Suppé to a German libretto by the composer and 'Poly Henrion' (the pseudonym of Leonhard Kohl von Kohlenegg). This arrangement of Einmal möcht' Ich so verliebt sein (one aria of the operetta) for orchestra and soprano voice is a very good Encore or an orchestral piece for your repertoire.

Flavio Regis Cunha is a pianist, conductor and composer from São Paulo - Brasil. He is currently finishing his doctorate at Mackenzie Presbyterian University where he works as conductor of the Mackenzie University Orchestra and resident composer. For more arrangements like this, works by commission or for any questions you can contact Flavio Regis Cunha at his facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/flavioregiscunha

In the early 1860s, French operettas by Jacques Offenbach were first presented in Vienna. Franz von Suppé was obliged to compete with them by taking the time-honored traditions of Vienna and combining it with the new style of Offenbach. Die schöne Galathée was Franz von Suppé's first critical success.

The sculptor Pygmalion has fallen madly in love with his statue of Galathée and accordingly does not want to sell it to Mydas, a patron of the arts. Instead he prays to Venus, the goddess of the love, that the statue be brought to life. The wish is granted but Galathée turns out to be a very independent-minded creature. She is unfaithful to Pygmalion with his servant Ganymed (because he is much more pleasing to her than Pygmalion) and does not reject Mydas, who offers her jewelry. When Pygmalion catches Galathée in a compromising situation, he successfully implores Venus to turn her back into stone. The jewelry offered by Mydas is also turned into stone, but the whole statue is sold to him.

‘Soar’ is a chorale for Harmonic Whirlies.

This piece, like some of my others, focuses on teamwork and the idea of ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’. It was composed in 2015 and performed by BaDaBoom Percussion.

In this composition, each player represents a set of notes in a specific harmonic series associated with their whirlies. Together, the ensemble creates harmony and resonates within the space. This piece is beautiful when performed in large auditoriums, churches or halls.

A passacaglia is ... a musical form that is usually of a serious character and is often, but not always, based on a bass-ostinato and written in triple meter. from Wikipedia. This passacaglia is a slow theme and variations, in a minor mode, with a bass ostinato. I have 3 versions; this one is a mambo version for Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, String Bass and 4-part latin percussion. The only difficult part is dealing with the counterpoint, but it is worth the effort, it will impress your audience, and is fun to play. I will be uploading a PDF with the individual parts. I have ALSO uploaded a version for piano, viola and double bass.and a string orchestra version. You could make a whole concert out this one piece!
