They were mostly grades 1-3.  I tried to arrange the parts to be meaningful but at the same time maintaining an effective, complete and pleasing sound. I often arranged parts with individuals in mind. The piano part is there for support and filling in. Not a difficult piece and very repetitive and catchy. I have arranged this piece for a school orchestra made up of pupils of grades 1-3. I suggest a solo for the first 4 bars (I did with a recorder). At F there is a ‘jazz’ style solo. Choose your instrument. Once I did with a recorder. A second time with a trumpet. Beware you won’t get the tune out of your head!!

Bass Xylo plays a simple bass line for the first half of the arrangement with a variation outlining the melody for the second half. Marimba would make a nice alternative to the Bass Xylo. Tempo and dynamic markings are suggested ones only. Multirest passages have been written out in full to make it easier for the beginning performer.

It has been arranged for the younger Orff Ensemble performers using simple rhythms and basic note values. Sop Glock and Alto Met play the tune throughout. Alto Glock provides some harmony with a simple bass line played by Bass Xylo. Arranged in the key of F Major, players will need their Bb bars. It is named after the edelweiss, a white flower found high in the Alps. The song was created for the 1959 Broadway production of The Sound of Music, as a song for the character Captain Georg von Trapp (originated by the performer Theodore Bikel). In the musical, Captain von Trapp and his family sing this song during the concert near the end of Act II, as a statement of Austrian patriotism in the face of the pressure put upon him to join the navy of Nazi Germany following the Anschluss (Nazi annexation of their homeland). It is also Captain von Trapp's subliminal goodbye to his beloved homeland, using the flower as a symbol of his loyalty to Austria.
