For some time our students have been requesting that we write a second chair piece. Finally, we have obliged with Splashed Out, a follow up piece to Double Stacked (2011).

This splashy performance piece, inspired by the genre and rhythms of Reggaeton can be played by ensembles of 4-20 players and is also suitable as a whole class item.

Requirements

Chair 1 – two plastic chairs per player

Chair 2 – two plastic chairs per player

Low Drum – one low drum per player (floor tom or bass drum)

Splash cymbals – 3 contrasting splash cymbals for one player

 

Doubling:

Chairs 1 & 2 may be doubled multiple times.

The low drum may be doubled at a proportion of 1 low drum to 4 chairs

The splash part is a solo part and should not be doubled.

The title of Dandelion Wind comes from watching the white seeds blow off of a dandelion head in a strong breeze.  Once in motion, the seeds travel with the wind until they come to a final resting place on the ground below.  This piece flows along in that vein of a seedling's windblown journey.

Although two marimbas were used in the sound file, the piece works equally well with vibraphones, xylophones, or a vibe/xylo/marimba mix.  It has a slight Celtic feel to it, and it comes in at just over 1:30 if played at the minimum suggested tempo.  It's a great choice for your percussion ensemble or to showcase a pair of mallet players in your program.  The piece only requires one mallet per hand.

Written for Glockenspiel duet, the spooky nature of this piece is represented through a tone row built off of Prime: D-Flat, F, E-Flat, A-Flat, G-Flat, E, A, D, B-Flat, C, G, B. The piece is strictly serial in nature, following the existing permutations of a tone row first experimented with by Arnold Schoenberg.The piece gives off a mysterious and spooky feel. Good for any small chamber ensemble.

Falls House Press has published his works  Faces and Mot pour Laura in the United States. Various articles in specialized journals and sites have cited the composer, such as the Flutist Quarterly (Circus Brasilis - The flute music of Sergio Roberto de Oliveira), Early Music America (Something New for Early Music), Andante.com (The heirs of Villa-Lobos), 21st Century Music, Musicabrasileira.org, etc. Sergio Roberto de Oliveira has frequently been invited to lecture at American universities, and has spoken at more than a dozen institutions including Princeton and Duke. In 2009 he was Artist-in-Residence at Duke University. In addition the USA and the UK, Oliveira's music has also been played in many countries, with invitations for concerts exclusively with his music in México, Italy and Holland (Amsterdam).  The Spanish Magazine Sonograma has published 2 interviews with Sergio.

Sergio is the founder and a member of the group of composers Prelúdio 21. The group is one of the most active worldwide. It holds a distinguished place in Brazilian contemporary music, having been active for 15 consecutive seasons, with a permanent series of monthly concerts since 2008. In 2011 the group released the CD String Quartets, with performances by the Quarteto Radamés Gnattali. Oliveira is also a member of the group of composers Vox Novus, based in New York.

To commemorate 15 years of activity as a composer, Oliveira released a box set with 4 CDs, as well as a CD with composer Mark Hagerty, and produced the series QUINZE, with 13 concerts including his works, between July and October of 2012.  More than 130 musicians, including 28 composers, participated of QUINZE (CDs and series).

His discography includes 14 CDs as producer, 14 as composer, 22 as general producer, 2 as arranger and 2 as pianist. His catalog of compositions includes approximately 115 works for various ensembles, including Symphony Orchestra.  

Sergio Roberto de Oliveira is a member of the Latin Academy of the Arts and Science of Recording.

He died from pancreatic cancer in 2017.

An 8 part, shorter and easier arrangement of this well known Russian Dance by Tchaikovsky. Scored for Sop Glock, Alto Glock, Sop Xyl, Alto Xyl, Alto Met, Bass Xylo, Woodblock and Tambourine. Consisting of only the main theme with a stringendo ending, this arrangement is more suitable for less advanced performers. Arranged in the key of G Major, F# bars will be needed with some passages also requiring C# bars. Alto Glock adds some fun and panache with the Glissandi bars at the start of the main theme. Tempo and dynamic markings are suggested ones only. If preferred, a full version arrangement is available for more advanced players.

3x3 is a trio for snare and bass drums written for the Southern Oregon University Percussion Ensemble. It features numerous sections that contain contrapuntal exchanges and complex rhythmic patterns between groups of 2 or 3 players. There is an open solo section followed by a contrasting soft section played with soft timpani mallets. It ends with a unison section that is restated in increasingly quick tempos that build tension until the final decrescendo into nothing.
