American composer, James Nathaniel Holland, brings a ballet adapted from the first century Roman novel by Gaius Petronius (cir. 50 A.D.) to the stage. An entertaining ballet for adults (not suitable for general audiences under the age of 18), celebrating the male ballet dancer's physique and a laugh at our own human sexuality. The comedy is a romp of three gay protagonists and their adventures and misadventure in ancient Rome and their characters; an ex-gladiator, Enclopius, his young lover, Giton, and an upper class snob, Ascyltos. It should also be said that this ballet is not pure gratuitous vulgarity, there is a interweaving story containing a deeper message of real human relationships, the satire of ancient Roman archetypes, and a humorous glimpse into ancient Roman life that still rings true even 2,000 plus years later. Regardless of the subject matter, Holland's original music is fantastic tapestry of counterpoint, set in a sort of atonal-ism and heavy percussion, evoking a period of history no longer available to us. Although not all cues and counterpoint is contained here, this piano score is extremely useful for either a performance with 2 pianos and percussion and a dance company, a director's/choreographer's score, or a concise conductor's score, or rehearsal score. Measure numbers line up with the full score. An orchestral, performance CD is available for those company's on a budget.

Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.·     Choose a tempo.·     Choose a dynamic.·     Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

This is followed by a short untuned percussion solo. After this, theme A is closed in a calm, non-violent manner. Immediately theme B comes in which is built up through crescendos and multiple instruments over time. Theme B also comes to a quiet end afterwards. Dan Heslink Sharks’ Teeth is a musical game, or contest, between two or more percussionists. It is based on rhythm, and can therefore be executed on any combination of indefinitely-pitched percussion instruments. Its execution relies on guided improvisation governed by preconceived thematic material and manners of elaboration. In addition to the two or more contestants, another musician functions as a Game Meister (GM) who controls that game’s progress and evaluation. Enclosed are the game instructions for a contest of guided improvisation, and a notated example for two percussionists and Game Meister, Shark’s Tooth. This score can also be played on recital. After reading the contest instructions, the composer recommends that contestants next play the notated example before attempting the game through improvisation.  Besides being fun to play, this game is also an excellent tool for fostering concentration, musicality, memory and an understanding of musical structure. The band stand was forged by the National Heritage Ironwork Group as a gift to the city during their 2018 'BathIron' festival. The piece is written for 2 treble clef parts and a bass clef part and can be performed by any group of instruments. For the original performance it was performed on 2 Bb Clarinets and a Bass Clarinet.About the piece:'The Hammer & Anvil' is derived from the melody of an English folk song about a blacksmith (ironworker) which has been adapted and augmented to be used as a melodic foundation throughout the piece, similar to an isorhythm in medieval compositions. The piece is in two sections: the A section where the folk melody is confined to the bass and the B section where the melody is split between all three parts. A repeated rhythmic motif, representative of an ironworker using his hammer and anvil, is used to accompany and/or decorate this melody.

Grim (A0.939392). Another Place is a marimba quartet on two instruments with some accessory items like a mounted bass drum, cymbal, and wind chimes. The work is about 10.5 minutes long, and holds three distinct movements that begin with solemn rolls that slowly become more regimented and rhythmic. The second movement raises the bar and becomes very rhythmic and syncopated with a Reich-like approach of melody vs interlocking harmony. This climax brings a high dynamic level to the forefront of the instruments with interlocking impact points being contrasted to unison hits. The third movement takes this original melody and harmony to the next level by using changing time signatures and motivic ideas to maximize the powerful ending. Throughout there is a deep sense of color and texture that can be maximized by the ensemble in new and exciting ways with each performance. This has plenty of ink, but also leaves a lot to interpret and bring the ensemble’s voice forward. I hope you enjoy! This work won the Audience Award in the Rocky Mountain Music Composition Contest in 2022 as well as Second Prize overall. These international awards were judged by a panel of seven judges from around the world, but with the competition based out of Toronto, Canada.

I often arranged parts with individuals in mind. The piano part is there for support and filling in. Not a difficult piece and very repetitive and catchy. I have arranged this piece for a school orchestra made up of pupils of grades 1-3. I suggest a solo for the first 4 bars (I did with a recorder). At F there is a ‘jazz’ style solo. Choose your instrument. Once I did with a recorder. A second time with a trumpet. Beware you won’t get the tune out of your head!!

It also pays homage to the great percussion composer Kevin Tuck and his piece Summon the Spirits, who has created drumming pieces that are the staple of percussion music all around the world.As always, the aim is that the ensemble has fun and enjoys the groove. Coming from a long background of Latin and African drumming styles, my compositions place a heavy emphasis on feeling the rhythm and hearing all the parts lock in, rather than being accurate.
