Joaquín Malats's Serenata Española was premiered at the Salon Érard in Barcelona on 22 September 1891,[1] and was published by Zozaya a year later. Despite what it may seem from the initial title on the cover of the Suite Impresiones de España, this work was never performed as a suite for orchestra. Originally conceived as a collection in which the Serenade was the second of the pieces, only this one was published in addition to the first one: Danza. Joaquim Malats performed these two compositions in numerous concerts as part of the Suite Impresiones de España,[2] however, he neither published them as a unitary corpus, nor did the ochestral version see the light. Meanwhile, it is a known fact that Segovia often edited the musical text of the compositions written for him and arranged it according to his personal style of interpretation. Our new editions of Turina's most important works are therefore based on both the first editions and the original autograph versions, thus presenting for the first time the original text. Today, no performer can get around these new editions if he/she wants to deal with Turina's artistic legacy in a responsible manner.

This version was arranged for solo guitar in fingerstyle by Fernando Neves in the key of E minor and Time signature 6/8.  It is perfect for congregational worship, church services, weddings, funerals or for personal reflection. An arrangement for solo fingerstyle guitar in DGDGAD tuning of the traditional Christmas Carol, In The Bleak Midwinter.  DGDGAD tuning is one I use often, and really works well on guitar.  In essence, it's just open G tuning with the second string tuned down a step to A.  This adjustment of the second string opens more possibilities for harp style playing melodically.  A great holiday addition to any guitarists repertoire for gigging, church, or just personal enjoyment.  Easy intermediate level.
