This is a festive and fun piece. It will probably take some preparing to play this up to speed if you want to play it fast. The chorus has a nice counter­melody in the bass. The main melody also switches octaves as you might hear a choir exchange parts between the different voices. The first verse stays in the main voice, then the 2nd verse moves up an octave, then down to the bass strings. A certain amount of syncopation will keep the fingers busy on the right hand. The left will need to handle a few stretches but nothing outrageous. A 1/2 barre is required at one point along the way.

This arrangement is designed for upper intermediate level classical guitar. The phrases are homophonic and easier to play than the more challenging refrain, which includes polyphony and several position changes. With some practice and skill, this piece can be very enjoyable for Christmas recitals or private parties or alone in front of the Christmas Tree.

The hymn that is this Christmas carol has gone through many iterations before popularly settling on this most commonly sung Mendelssohn melody. The arrangement is well within the intermediate level with the possible exception of the first two measures of the last two lines. There is a stretch here between fingers one and four, frets one and five with the additional challenge of a middle voice. Another carol offered by this arranger is, Once In Royal David's City, which has the same stretch but without the inner voice with which to contend. These two pieces are frequently performed together due to other similarities between them.
