This is a single-movement, 8 page solo guitar sonata in F minor that I composed in 2000.  My main inspirations were the late piano sonatas of Beethoven (especially Op. 111) and the late string quartets of Shostakovich (particularly No. 13). This is a very demanding work to play. Prescribed tempo should be no LESS than 152 bpm.  The work is a traditional sonata form and includes large stretches as well as chords and melodies in harmonics played over continuously moving bass lines using conventional tones on the lower strings.  .

This mood seems to me folded into the Brazilian Bossa Nova, and the Brazilians? term ?saudade?; in this piece I offer up my tribute to one of my favourite composers, Radamés Gnattali (1906-1988), who wrote for every musical situation in his era in Brazil ? from the concert stage to the back alley, and everything in between. Lua para Epilogo de Verão, is dedicated to the Brazilian guitarist Fabio Zanon, who is both a great friend and a tremendous inspiration.This étude tackles solid chords and contrary motion in the left hand, and, like all the études in this collection, voice separation and phrasing. In measure 24 the guitarist must execute a diagonal barré, where the first finger covers position IV at the first string, and position V at the fifth string, hence the V/IV indication after the barré symbol. The practicalities of navigating through the different chord shapes and rhythms in the piece mean that not all notes can be held for their full, written value. Unlike its predecessor Jehkin Iivana, which draws its inspiration from the world of Finnish myths and the ancient tradition of poet singers, the sources of the Sonata N° 2 are more abstract. The first movement starts with dissonant intervals, full of drama and conflict while the second has a dream-like atmosphere as if the guitar has been left alone in the forest. After a nightmarish episode, more hopeful music suddenly starts to appear. In the last movement the guitar returns to fight its tormentors from the first movement with renewed energy and takes its way heroically through all obstacles to a triumphant end. Olli Mustonen.
