Toccata/Hands of Steel II. Strum/Serenade III. O Tanenbaum (Toccata reprise) IV. Two-Part Contention V. John Doe VI. True Pluck A number of years ago, the great English guitarist Julian Bream told David Tanenbaum - the dedicatee of tonight's premiere - not to premiere a guitar work unless he knew for a fact it was the composer's second guitar work. Sage advice. The guitar is an instrument that gives up its secrets to a non-guitar playing composer only reluctantly. Indeed, the timbral, digital and chordal subtleties of this most subtle and intimate instrument are truly understood by the guitarist only. Pity the outlander who composes for the guitar for the first time! With this last thought in mind I had, until last fall, managed to avoid writing a guitar piece. However, even the most abject compositional coward will relent when a musician like David Tanenbaum asks for a piece and offers his assistance and critical judgement in its composition. So it was with PLUCK, composed between November of 1995 and January of 1996. Bream's advice notwithstanding, PLUCK is my first guitar piece. Tanenbaum is brave. The title, PLUCK, thus refers to both the action of plucking strings as well as pluck - bravery, grit, true grit. PLUCK is written in six interrelated movements. The first movement, Toccata/Hands of Steel introduces much of the essential pitch and harmonic material of the piece, as well as Flamenco-style rasgueado strumming which, try as I might, I could not resist using. Movement two, Strum/Serenade, explains itself in its title. Movement three, O Tanenbaum (a designation for which David has forgiven me) reprises the Toccata and describes, well, a sort of musical tree (David has forgiven me for this, too). Two-Part Contention is a combatative, argumentative movement that pits the treble strings of the guitar against the bass. Movement 5, John Doe is a lyric and mysterious moment of rest before the manic finale. Movement 6, True Pluck, is a fast, furious and virtuosic finale. PLUCK is dedicated, with greatest respect and affection, to my friend David Tanenbaum. May he only want to play my second guitar piece.

Composed by Various. Arranged by Socrates Arvanitakis. Renaissance. Individual part. 83 pages. Socrates Arvanitakis #915591. Published by Socrates Arvanitakis (A0.1327548).

FROM THE PREFACE

The fourth volume of Renaissance music for classical guitar contains twenty mostly well-known and a few more rare intermediate Renaissance pieces taken mainly from lute and vihuela sources.
I have tried to keep the upper level of technical difficulty to the contemporary grade VI level of the A.B.R.S.M. which takes the student to the advanced level (grades VII-VIII).

The pieces are given in two versions, first as decorated pages in ordinary notation, and then the same pieces are again given in undecorated pages of notation and tablature. Therefore each volume contains two books in one and the choice is left to the user whether to keep the volume as presented, or to construct his own book by inclusion or deletion of unwanted pages, blank pages, etc, for use either as a printed or a tablet-screen book version. The addition of tablature of course results in increasing the number of pages needed for the presentation of the pieces, therefore the staff sizes are here reduced to an appropriate degree which can maintain the two-page view principle of any piece without need for automatic or manual page turners, foot pedals etc.

THEMATIC INDEX OF THIS VOLUME  & NAVIGATION BY ACTIVE LINKS

The thematic index following the cover page of this volume contains active links to the decorated pages of the pieces.
The titles of the pieces are also active links interconnecting decorated and tablature pages of the same piece.
The header in pages containing  the title of a piece is an active link bringing back to the thematic index.
The YOUTUBE logo icons in the thematic index are external links to particular performances of these pieces by various artists.

By The Beatles. By John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Arranged by Richard Hirsch. 20th Century,Instructional,Pop,Renaissance,Standards. Individual part. 5 pages. Richard Hirsch #699472. Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1095456).

An arrangement of the Beatles classic for solo acoustic guitar. The arrangement tries to capture the sense of remorse and loss expressed in the song using arpeggio-like minor chords with many open strings and the same note played on different strings. The arrangement is inspired by a similarity I find in the melody to older pieces by John Dowland and the folk melody Greensleeves. I strive to give the piece an old-fashioned, almost Renaissance, character in accord with its basic modal nature. Some parts of the arrangement may be interpreted as a sort of Fantasia based on the original melody. A nice piece for an encore to a program of early music for the guitar! As the notation is accompanied by tablature, I refrain from giving left-hand fingering and leave the right-hand fingering to the taste and discretion of the performer. The piece is within reach of intermediate to advanced guitarists. The piece also works well as an introduction to locating notes in the higher, seventh, ninth, and tenth positions and could therefore serve as instruction for less advanced guitarists, especially since the piece is played at a slow to moderate tempo.
