The musical material for the arrangement is taken from standard traditional themes for the Soleares style of Flamenco. The arrangement is meant for guitarists and students of guitar that are new to Flamenco and want to learn the basics for one of the most important palos in Flamenco. The arrangement can be used to accompany a solo dance, customary in serious (jondo) Flamenco, often performed by a woman dancer. The Soleares rhythm consists of a repetition of a twelve beat phrase the Flamencos refer to as a compás where accents fall on the third, sixth, eight, tenth, and twelfth beats of the phrase (1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12). I notate the compás as a series of five measures that comprises two 3/4 measures followed by three 2/4 measures. Throughout the notation there is, therefore, a fluctuating between two measures in 3/4 and three measures in 2/4 time. The first beat of the compás falls on the second beat of the first 3/4 measure in the series and the first accented beat falls on the first beat of the second 3/4 measure. The sixth, eight, and tenth accented beats fall on the first beats of the 2/4 measures in the series. The twelfth beat falls on the first beat of the next series beginning with a 3/4 measure. Notating the compás in this manner allows the guitarist a total grasp of the underlying structure of the music, something that is often lost in other notations I have studied for Soleares. A command of the compás is essential for the guitarist to be able to work with Flamenco singers and dancers. The Soleares is a stately dance that moves at a moderate pace, but often ends in a finale (macho por Bulerías) that is more than twice as fast as the first sections of the dance. The finale also contains a key change from the Phrygian mode of the llamadas and corridas to the key of E major. The arrangement contains essential basic techniques for Flamenco guitar, the rasqueado, the legato with hammering on, the four finger tremolo that rips at the strings before a full chord with the thumb, alzapúa where the thumb strikes in triplets down, up, down in rapid succession, etc. Students should dedicate themselves to a close and careful study of the notation to gain full mastery of these techniques. The arrangement consists of several sections, the llamadas which are calls to the dancer to take the stage, corridas where the dancer moves in a circle executing various heel and toe steps together with hand, arm, and body gestures, and the macho where the dance ends in a storm of stamping and a fit of wild abandon. The corrida sections consist of melodies Flamencos call “falsetasâ€. One of these is simply a series of broken chords while another is a melody taken from a song called “Caña†that is a member of the Soleares family. The notation ends, as is prescribed for the dance, on the tenth beat of the last compás (the first beat of the last 2/4 measure in the last five measure series). The Soleares was the first palo my maestro Juan González “Triguito†introduced me to in my studies with him in Madrid in the late 1960’s and is considered to be the “mother†of true forms of Flamenco. The title of the arrangement is in celebration of the beautiful patios of Córdoba, home of the Flamenco palo Soleares.

PULSO DE LA VIDA was composed as part of my dear friend Kostas Tosidis' doctoral thesis with the title Bowing technique on the guitar.The character of the piece changes from simple and meditative to rhythmic and tension-filled, reflecting different stages of our lives.Using a C, G, D tuning for the bass strings, the guitar utilizes resonance to create sustained, cello-sounding melodies on the fourth string, complemented by harmonies on the fifth and sixth strings.The bowing technique is introduced with a continuous tremolo accompanied by an extended form of the first theme. The more dancelike and rhythmical part of the piece uses a 19/16 measure that allows us to experience a sense of disparity. Finally, the simplicity combined with a sense of completeness, but also of abandonment of the beautiful gift of life, leaves us in a state of stillness for any kind of introspection.PULSO DE LA VIDA a été composé dans le cadre de la recherche doctorale de mon cher ami Kostas Tosidis, sous le titre Bowing technique on the guitar (technique d'archet à la guitare).Le caractère de la pièce passe de simple et méditatif à rythmique et plein de tension, reflétant les différentes étapes de notre vie.La guitare, dont les cordes basses sont accordées en do, sol et ré, utilise la résonance pour créer des mélodies soutenues au son du violoncelle sur la quatrième corde, complétées par des harmonies sur les cinquième et sixième cordes.La technique d'archet est introduite par un trémolo continu accompagné d'une forme étendue du premier thème. La partie plus dansante et rythmique de la pièce utilise une mesure 19/16 qui nous permet d'éprouver un sentiment de disparité. Enfin, la simplicité combinée à un sentiment de plénitude, mais aussi d'abandon du magnifique cadeau qu'est la vie, nous laisse dans un état de tranquillité propice à toute forme d'introspection.

Anyone learning about his relatively short life must also pay tribute to his resolve and courage. I've noticed during my time in bands that the music I like sparks creativity, and the lovely theme from the Kyrie of the Mass in C minor spawned a lot of ideas once I'd decided to write something for guitar using it. Mozart's harmonies seem both exclusive and perfect, and I can't imagine my musical life without them. I got to know the Mass when I looked after Nigel's place while he was away, as it was in his record collection. My good friend died (of bone cancer) not long after that, and the Fantasy is a homage to him.

This Gigue is the finale of a four-movement sonata composed in 2018. Publication of the entire sonata is forthcoming. In the interim, I am offering three movements – the Passacaglia, Sarabande and Gigue – as single standalone works. I have performed them in my own concert programs both as part of the larger sonata and on their own. I believe that they work equally well both ways. The Gigue form is a lively dance in triple meter that stems from the Irish jig. It probably originated in England and Ireland in the 16th century. In the Baroque period and beyond, composers have often used gigues as the final movement of dance suites. The Gigue offered here is a galloping romp in 6/8 time with eighth notes running throughout most of the piece. It recalls similar gigues by the lutenist Sylvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750) and the Tarantelle by Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856). (The Tarantella is a similar lively dance form in triple time). Like the Passacaglia, the Gigue uses an E harmonic minor scale with an added (structural) B flat that helps to blur the sense of strict tonality. The second section includes hints of G and B tonal areas before returning to E minor to end the piece.

Published by Eric J Roth (A0.914747). Benjamin Godard (1849-1895) was a French  violinist and composer of Jewish heritage. He wrote hundreds of works, including  symphonies, operas, concertos, chamber and solo pieces, and songs. Today he is  most remembered for his five symphonies and the Berceuse from his opera,  Jocelyn. In style, Godard's music is reminiscent of the early Romantic  period rather than the more grandiose style of Wagner. Godard wrote two sonatas for solo violin. The first dates from the 1870s. The  second was composed in the 1890s and published after his death. Both sonatas contain four movements and employ baroque dance forms. The Deuxiéme (second) Sonata,  arranged here for guitar solo, opens with a Sarabande in A minor, marked molto  moderato e pompasamente (very moderately and pompously). The following Rigodon in C major is quick and convivial, although a contrasting section in C  minor tempers the mood. The third movement, Adagio non ma troppo, begins in a  tranquil F major. The texture soon thickens and makes striking use of the  instrument’s lower register. A sudden modulation to F minor provides the  sonata's most introspective moment. The piece returns to A minor and ends in a dramatic  cliffhanger on the dominant. The rhythmic Bourrée serves as a true  finale and includes a frenetic contrapuntal section recalling the violin  sonatas of J. S. Bach.

As a musician he was a lute player of professional level and seems to have been a refined and prolific composer of single pieces and suites in the French style for his instrument. His compositions are becoming known to us today through important academic research but a lot more work has to be made in this field. The present suite in Em has the following eight movements:1 Allemande2 Courante3 Sarabande La Favorita4 Double5 Gavotte I6 Gavotte II & (Gavotte I da capo)7 Menuett8 GigueNone of these dance movements is too difficult to play, but they are all musically rewarding and the compositional standard is kept high in all of them maintaining a two-part contrapuntal writing throughout the suite.In these editions I prefer not to add any fingerings because I consider that they obscure the optical result rather than clarifying any particular way of playing the music. Especially if tablatures are provided as is the case with this volume the suggested left hand fingerings become quite clear, but  Instrumentalists can disregard these suggestions and provide their own fingering and choice of positions.Interactive thematic index has been provided for easy navigation to individual movements either in decorated or in tablature pages and back to the index.If a printed copy is desired, blank pages have been provided for insertion at will and for correct order of left and right side pages.MP3 of the music has been created using the Note Performer playback engine.
