Solo Guitar - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.954949

Composed by Jim Bosse. Concert,Contemporary,World. Individual part. 11 pages. Jim Bosse #4574679. Published by Jim Bosse (A0.954949).

This is the final movement from Suite Grandkids which contains six pieces originally scored for classical guitar trio, one for each of the grandkids that I had at that time (2005). This version is for classical guitar solo. Most of the notes are there. It is fun to perform as multi-tasking is required to play a percussion part with feet.  The picture of my grandkids looks like a poster for cultural diversity. Their varied genetic backgrounds presented an opportunity to compose an eclectic suite with each piece presenting a style representative of their unique genetic heritage. Performance time for the entire suite is 23 minutes but each piece could stand alone on a concert program. Soren's Jig was written in a Scottish style, highlighting his genetic heritage. As the finale for this suite, each other gandkid's theme is revisited. Performance time is 4 minutes and 09 seconds, with a demand level of mostly intermediate with a few advanced sections. Jim's web site is www.facebook.com/jimbosseguitar .

Composed by Jeremiah Lawson. 21st Century,Classical. Individual part. 18 pages. Jeremiah Lawson #1031408. Published by Jeremiah Lawson (A0.1452092).

Thomas Commuck (1804 to 1855) was a member of the Narragansett tribe and is considered the first Native
American to publish a musical work using Western European notation. The work, Indian Melodies, is a shape?note
hymnal published as a contribution to the hymnody of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was published in 1845.

Guitar Sonata on themes by Thomas Commuck is a traditional four?movement work with an opening sonata
movement (Mooanam); a double variation form (Menominie and Susquehannah); a canonic minuet with trio (Pequot and Missouri; and a closing prelude with fugue (Flathead). The melodies are labeled as they appear throughout the score, though not always with reference to their original forms. I made a few gentle modifications to Commuck’s melodies to better facilitate their use in polyphonic textures.

You can hear the second movement here

I'm publishing this work in June 2024 to commemorate the centennial of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924.

Composed by Sol Paul Levy (1881-1920). Arranged by Eric J Roth. 20th Century,Romantic Period. Individual part. 6 pages. Eric J Roth #4593125. Published by Eric J Roth (A0.914739).

6 pages (2 pages of music) formatted for 8.5x11 printing.

Sol Paul Levy, born  in Chicago, Illinois in 1881, was a composer, arranger and performer of silent  film music. He attended All Hallows College in Dublin, Ireland and served as  first clarinetist in bands led by John Philip Sousa and Arthur Pryor. Levy led  the foreign orchestrating department for Victor Records – which was the first  music company to produce the disc record – and was a founder of Belwin Music. Levy  compiled a series of photoplay cues for piano that was published in H.S. Gordon’s 1914 Motion Picture Collection. He also wrote songs, the most  famous of which was That Naughty Waltz. Sol Paul Levy died in New York in 1920.

During the Silent Film Era (1896-1936), showings usually featured live music, which helped to provide  dramatic and emotional cues for the audience. The first public silent film shown  in 1895 was accompanied by a guitarist. Soon after, films were commonly accompanied  by either a pianist, organist, or chamber orchestra. Accompanists often  improvised or compiled music from the classical, theatrical or popular repertories  using a cue sheet identifying the effects or moods to be conveyed. While some  films produced full scores or detailed cue sheets containing excerpts of music  unique to that film, a repertoire of generic music soon developed to provide accompanists  with music that they could adapt as needed. With titles such as Dramatic  Conflict, Dramatic Tension, Heavy Mysterioso, and Weird Oriental Theme, Sol  Paul Levy’s scores clearly served this purpose.

The Vampire: A  Dramatic Theme, composed in 1917, could have been easily adapted to any of the  more than twenty films about vampires that appeared between 1909 and 1930. The  score exists in three versions: one for small orchestra with piano conductor,  one for chamber orchestra without piano, and one for chamber orchestra without  timpani. Instruments included piano, flute, clarinet,  two cornets, trombone, two timpani, two violins, viola, cello, and bass. Despite being composed for small  orchestra, the piece, composed in A minor, is well suited to the guitar once  instrumental and octave doublings are removed. While a solo guitar cannot  produce the power and volume of a chamber orchestra, it certainly can evoke the  intended mood. Except in a few instances owing to the limitations of the guitar,  all original dynamic markings have been retained. All fingerings, of course, are editorial. Please note that some of the fingerings in the score may differ than those used in the linked YouTube Video.

Composed by Rod Whittle. Classical. Individual part. 4 pages. Maggie Creek Music #37277. Published by Maggie Creek Music (A0.899126).

4 pages; for solo classical guitar; based on a theme from the Mass in C Minor; published by Maggie Creek Music

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 1756 -1791

Mozart, whom his sister recounted as picking out thirds on the family clavier at the age of three for the pleasure of it, has been described as achieving miracles of sound across every emotion. Indeed one runs out of superlatives trying to do justice to the quality and originality of his compositions and the abundance of output. Anyone learning about his relatively short life must also pay tribute to his resolve and courage.

I've noticed during my time in bands that the music I like sparks creativity, and the lovely theme from the Kyrie of the Mass in C minor spawned a lot of ideas once I'd decided to write something for guitar using it. Mozart's harmonies seem both exclusive and perfect, and I can't imagine my musical life without them. I got to know the Mass when I looked after Nigel's place while he was away, as it was in his record collection. My good friend died (of bone cancer) not long after that, and the Fantasy is a homage to him.
