It is dedicated to Blake McGee, who premiered the piece in February of 2023. The sonata is in two movements: Andante con affetto and Ballad. The first movement is in sonata form, written in a neo-romantic style and contrasts the different registers of the clarinet: the rich and beautiful chalumeau register in the first theme, with grim and melancholic character, and the more brilliant higher notes of the clarinet in the second theme, flowing and operatic. The theme on the second movement is meant to entice the imagination of the listener with the image of a minstrel telling of a journey made a long time ago, entertaining the audience with the variations that unfold, only to return with the opening melody back in the end, as if teaching the morals of the story.

Born in Oppenheim on the Rhine on 27 November 1879, the composer chose to live on the Sparrhof, her family's estate, all her life until her death on 11 August 1961. Her amazing musicality already showed at an early age and was early recognized and actively encouraged by her parents. Max Reger repeatedly testified to his pupil's 'extraordinary compositional talent'. The works by Johanna Senfter are mainly influenced by Brahms and Reger, but she knew pretty soon how to further develop Reger's personal style individually in her own works without ever crossing the - widely drawn - boundaries of a harmony based on the functional theory. The time of creation of the Sonata for A clarinet (or viola) and piano Op. 57 can only be estimated: probably around 1925. It's final movement is full of vivaciousness and makes a great finale. It has been performed many times and each time the audience has received extremely well. It is filled with mixed meters and hemiolas, the rhythm gives this piece it's cohesiveness from beginning to end. The mp3 is of the composer performing it and unfortunately the person recording it did not get the audience applause at the end which was an immediate enthusiastic standing ovation.
