Since relocating to Southern Chile in 2016, composer Edgar Girtain has been immersed in the music of his adopted home, frequently performing with folk musicians in rural areas through the Los Lagos region. Two Andean Airs draws on a folkmusic style native to northern Chile (cultures of the Andean Plateau). The first piece was drawn from the third of composer's well-known Trios for Flute, Violin and Cello, while the second comes from a suite of Huaynos composed and arranged for a latin-american orchestra ofstudents that the composer co-directs in Puerto Montt. Both are outdoor style pieces, typical of what might be heard performed by brass or pan-flute bands at religious festivals in the deserts of northern Chile.

In fact, the town of Shenandoah had special police guarding nineteen quarantined houses that included Shenandoah’s mayor and the president of the Page County Board of Health. Also included in this quarantine was the dean of Strong’s College of Music at Dixon, W. F. Strong. Strong, a graduate of the music programs at both the Northern Indiana Normal College (now Valparaiso University) and the Cincinnati College of Music, turned his creative juices to composition and among his prolific output during this period composed the short piece Quarantine Polka. It was published later that year as a part of his Gems of Pleasure series for piano and dedicated to Mae E. Black of Toledo, Ohio. This piece has been placed in a concert band setting but retains the original carefree flavor of Strong’s 1885 composition.

Published by Allan Nimmo Gilliland (A0.987813). The word Kalla is Norwegian for call, a theme that appears both in the inspiration for this piece and the structure of the work itself. Commissioned by the 2009 National Youth Band of Canada and funded through a grant from MacEwan University’s Centre for the Arts Research and Scholarly Activity Fund, the work was premiered May 13, 2009 by the National Youth Band of Canada under the direction of Dr. Shelley Jagow, featuring Dean McNeill as the soloist. For me Kalla is a crossover piece stylistically for the soloist. It draws upon both classical and jazz inspired techniques including traditional cadenzas with virtuosic runs and triple tonguing and contrasting sections featuring jazz plunger techniques, a unique sound not often heard in band music. The trumpet culture at turn of the century (late 19th century-early 20th century) in New Orleans was the inspiration for Kalla. Trumpet players would go down to the river and play a note to see how long it took the echo to come back. Soon, another trumpet would answer, higher and louder, and the game of one-upsmanship would begin. Trumpet calls and answers from across the city would sound. Kalla is based on this concept of call and response with the opening trumpet call coming physically from three different places in the concert hall. As the piece develops call and response continues between the soloist and ensemble.
