Concert Band - Grade 2 - Digital Download

SKU: B0.PDF-BAND382

Composed by Lee Shook. Victory March is a compelling choice for Grade 2 level band students. Multicultural. Score and Parts. 52 pages. PDF Band Music #PDF-BAND382. Published by PDF Band Music (B0.PDF-BAND382).

8.5 x 11 inches.

The traditional American march form was made popular by early 20th century composers Karl L. King, Henry Fillmore and Edwin Franko Goldman. John Phillip Sousa perfected this musical form which typically consists of: a short introduction, first strain melody, second strain melody, trio (modulating to the subdominant key), break strain (dogfight) and finally a reprise of the trio melody in grandioso style. Victory March is reminiscent of this style of traditional American march music, however, a short percussion soli has been used in place of the second strain. March style articulations have been included in parts to assist young students with proper performance interpretation.

Composed by Dame Ethel Mary Smyth. Arranged by Steven Nunes. 19th Century,Classical,Romantic Period. Score and Parts. 253 pages. Nagamon Publications #882900. Published by Nagamon Publications (A0.1292281).

Dame Ethel Mary Smyth DBE (22 April 1858 – 8 May 1944) was an English composer and a member of the women's suffrage movement. Her compositions include songs, works for piano, chamber music, orchestral works, choral works and operas.

Smyth tended to be marginalised as a ‘woman composer’ as though her work could not be accepted as mainstream. Yet when she produced more delicate compositions, they were criticised for not measuring up to the standard of her male competitors. Nevertheless, she was granted a damehood, the first female composer to be so honoured.

The Wreckers is an opera in three acts, composed by Dame Ethel Smyth to a libretto in French by Henry Brewster. After spending considerable energy in trying to get the work performed in French, the first performance took place in a German translation by John Bernhoff, under the title of Strandrecht, at the Neues Theater, Leipzig on 11 November 1906. Smyth persisted in her attempts to see it staged elsewhere, but it was not until the conductor Thomas Beecham championed the work that a complete, staged performance was achieved in England in 1909 with funding support from her friend Mary Dodge.

The Overture has been arranged for wind band, and the PDF contains the full score and a full set of parts.

Composed by Hewitt, James. Arranged by Jacklich, Joel. Holiday,Patriotic,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 26 pages. Joel Jacklich #6222869. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.723171).

In 1817, James Hewitt set Francis Scott Key's poem The Defence of Fort M'Henry (which we now better know as The Star Spangled Banner).  Hewitt's original song gained some local popularity; however, throughout most of the country, people began singing the poet's words to a popular drinking song then known to many Americans, English composer John Stafford Smith's To Anacreon in Heaven (originally written for a popular gentleman's club of amateur musicians in London, the Anacreontic Society).  Whereas John Stafford Smith's music was borrowed for the poem, Hewitt's music was especially composed for the poem.  I was asked by Mitch Sturman, the band director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, to arrange the original piano music for his band to play at his annual spring Concert of Premieres where he presented new works he had commissioned for his band from well-known band composers, and arrangements of neglected works he felt were worthy of performance.  This was one of those neglected worthy pieces by an American composer for an American poem.  It is orchestrated for flute, oboe, clarinets 1-3, bass clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, bassoon, French horn, trumpets 1-2, baritone horn, trombone, tuba, timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, and glockenspiel. .

A Jamestown Trilogy is a three-movement suite inspired by the story of Captain John Smith and his crew, who sailed from England on December 20, 1606 in three small ships, the Discovery, Susan Constant and Godspeed. They first landed at Cape Henry on April 26, 1607 and then sailed up the James River where, on May 14, 1607, they landed on a site they named Jamestown.

In 1608, Smith was captured by the Powhatan Indians. Legend has it that he was considered a threat to the Indians because of his interest in metals and in searching for a waterway west. Smith was sentenced to death and placed on a stone alter to be killed when a twelve year old Indian Princess rescued him. Matoaka, nicknamed Pocahontas (Playful One), the daughter of Powhatan, chief of the confederacy, threw her body across Smith's and saved his life.
