Wedding March was written by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in 1842. Appearing in A Midsummer Nightâ€™s Dream, it is one of the most frequently used wedding marches nowadays. We usually hear the piece on a church pipe organ.

The flexible instrumentation enables a mixture of instruments, from small ensemble to orchestra, to share the joy of wedding celebration. Essential fingerings and bowings are provided in the string parts. For instruments of Part 2 and 3, the range is within one octave.

On two occasions, Felix Mendelssohn composed music for William Shakespeare's play 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. First in 1826, near the start of his career, he wrote a concert overture (Op. 21). Later, in 1842, five years before his death, he wrote incidental music (Op. 61) for a production of the play, which is where this lovely movement is found. Leading with horn and bassoon trio, this would provide a moment of tranquility in any programme, particularly in a concert of opera/ballet music or perhaps one of film music, as this has been used in several movie soundtracks.

Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain is significant for several reasons. Composed in 1867, it is a tone poem inspired by the Russian legend of nocturnal revels on St. John's Night, involving a witches' Sabbath on Bald Mountain near Kiev. The piece is known for its high drama, dark textures, and bold harmonies, which Mussorgsky's colleagues considered excitingly expressive and raw. The work was unpublished and unrevised at the time of the composer's death, and his colleagues, including Rimsky-Korsakov, later revised it. The legend of the nocturnal revels on St. John's Night in June on a hill called Lysa Hora near Kiev is a prominent Slavic tale that inspired Modest Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain. The legend tells of a demon, Chernobog, who leads the revels until a far-off church bell sounds disperse the Spirits of Darkness. This tale is associated with the pagan festivities of the midsummer Slavic holiday and is a significant part of Russian folklore and culture. Lysa Hora, meaning Bald Mountain or Barren Mountain, is a large wooded hill in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, near the confluence of the Dnipro and Lybid' rivers, and is the traditional site of the witch gatherings in Slavic folklore. Although more famous for his incidental music to A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn was commissioned by the King of Prussia to provide music for Racine's religious drama Athalie, which includes the War March of the Priests. The march tune draws its energy from a repeating triplet figure in the introduction, and features a nice legato contrasting section. A great opportunity to teach style and nuance! (2:45)
