GRADE 2. This arrangement preserves the integrity of the original score with its use of the simple recurring melody and theme. A clarinet soloist featured in the “polka� variation of the main theme is playing the original accordion solo. In this section the Key changes to G Major, but to prevent confusion from younger band members, the local time signatures of all instruments aside from the soloist remain the same. Two trumpet soloists are featured in one of the mariachi variations of the ride playing the original harmonized triplet-filled variation of the theme. Articulations in the woodwinds must be exaggerated to maintain the interest of the audience.

'Boolavogue' was written in 1898 by Patrick Joseph McCall to honour Father John Murphy, the parish priest of Boolavogue (Wexford, Ireland), who led his parishioners in battle during the 1798 uprising. For his participation, Father Murphy was tortured, flogged, decapitated, burned, and ultimately, had his head put on a stake to warn his countrymen against further rebellion. This folksy arrangement is for solo voice (tenor), bass guitar, pipes (uillean or Northumbrian), fiddle, flute, and accordion. A lyric sheet is included on the last page.

I’D RATHER BE BLUE, THINKING OF YOU (than be happy with somebody else) was originally recorded by pioneering American songstress Fanny Brice in 1929. Since then it was featured in her biography “Funny Girl� when it was sung (and danced on roller-skates!) by Barbra Streisand. This is a FLEXIBLE ORCHESTRATION which implies that it is intended for community bands, bands in small schools, club bands etc. and can be played, not only by full bands or orchestras but by incomplete bands and bands that are made up of almost any mixture of instrument that you can imagine. To achieve this, the music is made up of five “Parts� or voices which are defined by pitch and key e.g. Part II Bb – Trumpet, Clarinet, Tenor saxophone etc. To those five are added additional parts for percussion, tuned percussion, piano and voice. I should mention here that, besides regular band or orchestral instruments, it is possible to include less used instruments such as harmonica, piano-accordion, ukulele, electric guitar – the list is endless! Lastly, it is possible to use flexible orchestrations for chamber groups of any size. They can be chosen by instrument family e.g. Woodwind quintet, or by particular instrument e.g. Clarinet Trio.
