This essential collection may be all you ever need for your wind instruments at Christmas. It's a bargain price too! These arrangements are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. The publication consists of a four-staff score in concert pitch together with fifteen separate parts in various transpositions plus a simplified optional keyboard part. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. These four-part arrangements use flexible instrumentation so that you can exercise considerable control over the instrumental voicing or use them for non-standard ensembles. You can also create interesting instrumental tone color by omitting groups of instruments. If the ensemble is large enough you could omit brass instruments in the quieter sections, or use a solo trumpet against a woodwind background. There are endless possibilities.
The complete set includes: Part 1 in B flat, E flat and C; Part 2 in B flat, E flat and C; Part 3 in B flat, E flat, F and C and Part 4 in B flat, E flat and C. Parts 1 and 2 in C have been printed an octave higher than the pitch shown in the score because invariably the parts lie too low for flute or oboe. For elementary players, a Part 1 in C (low) is included at concert (score) pitch. Parts 3 and 4 in C are in the bass clef. The arrangements could be played by virtually any combination of conventional wind band instruments. Using the optional keyboard part they could also be used as solos, duets or trios. Farandole is the finale of L'Arlésienne Suite No. 2. Published in 1879, the opening theme of this movement is also known as March of the Kings, which is an Epiphany carol. This energetic theme appears in the prelude of Suite No. 1 too.

Movin’ Thru is a fun, jazzy, bluessy shuffle tune; which is based on the 12 bar B-flat blues form. Movin' Thru could be a fun concert opener or closer! Depending on how many solos are taken the duration of this piece will vary. This piece is enjoyable for beginners as well as experience musicians. Beginners are encourage to just improvise off of the melody as well as the concert B-flat scale.
This piece focuses on unison playing and a bit of rhythmic independence. At the beginning, player II – does not need to play the rhythm exactly, but should focus on creating a round and strong sound! The director may choose to add piano tremolo’s, cymbal rolls or anything else during the �rst measure! Bars 12 and 13 need to be rhythmically accurate, chiefly for part I and part II. If part II are trumpet players they need to make sure that they take-out their harmon mute for those bars as it will give an extra punch! Commissioned by the International School Of Luxembourg (ISL). Premiered in Luxembourg, in December 2010, conducted by Dimosthenis Dimitrakoulakos.

Program Notes:

This piece is named for Yemanya (pronounced Yeh-MAHN-jah or Yeh-MAHN-jee), the Brazilian/African nurturing mother goddess of the ocean. She's known as a protector, supplier, and one who grants wishes. Every December 31st, Brazilians celebrate Yemanya by casting white flowers and miniature boats into the sea. If Yemanya grants your wish, her waves will swallow the boat and if she denies the wish the boat will wash up on shore. Yemanya teaches us to dive in at the very moment of golden opportunity, to enjoy the rhythms of life, and to allow all doubts to be washed away. 

The fluid, oceanic themes of the instruments represent the flow of the water and magic of Yemanya. The piece starts off with a soft wind chime accompanied by gong/tam-tam. Then the vibraphone enters mysteriously as the main theme that drives the whole piece as it subtly changes. The double bass creates a rhythmic pulse beneath the other sections. The gentle melodies in the flute dance around jazzy articulations in the trumpets and saxophones. There's an interplay of Afro-Cuban beats in the marimba and a bossa nova rhythm between the temple blocks and xylophone.

Throughout the piece I have tried to capture the water's motion and the ever-changing face of the sea. As the vibraphone returns to the original melody, we are reminded of Yemanya's eternal beauty and peaceful nature.

This well-known anthem is known in many countries of the world. This arrangement is ideal for brass or woodwind quartet but the flexible instrumentation makes it playable by various combinations of conventional wind instruments.
