Naval Reserve March Composed by John Philip Sousa Arranged for Concert Band by Jari Villanueva
To the Officers and Men of the US Naval Reserve
Intro: The song Blue Ridge

For Full Concert Band
Full and set of Parts included

Sousa's march The Naval Reserve was one of his naval salutes and dedicated to the officers and men of the Naval Reserve. The march incorporates his song, Blue Ridge, I’m Coming Back To You. The lyrics of the refrain begin, Blue Ridge, Blue Ridge, I hear the bugle call. Fittingly enough Sousa wrote a bugle call preceding the song which appears as the Trio in the march. This delightful bugle march is accompanied by a basic rhythmic figure on the 1st and 3rd beats of each measure and a sparse woodwind line.

This band arrangement by Jari Villanueva is a delightful setting of the original arrangement that gives the woodwinds and brass a chance to shine in different sections. Pay careful attention to the dynamics to make this march really shine!

A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. His arrangements are played by brass quintets all over the country including many military groups. Many of his arrangements can be found on Sheet Music Plus and JV MUSIC.

Jari is a 2016 Sheet Music Plus Arranging Contest winner.

Composed by Cesar Antonovich Cui. Arranged by Joel Jacklich (ASCAP). Romantic Period. Score and parts. 65 pages. Joel Jacklich #2063667. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.723039).

This is a patriotic Russian (Czarist) piece written in 1915. It describes the Imperial Russian naval vessel Slava (Glory) on patrol. While supposedly written for military wind orchestra, no known copy for band exists. The only copy is a version arranged for piano four-hands by Konstantin Chernov in the Russian State Library. Slava is a programmatic work that starts with a patriotic hymn, a bugle call to duty, on patrol, a bugle call to quarters, dangerous seas, a bugle call to secure from quarters, and a triumphant return to Mother Russia. This arrangement was made at the request of Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, CA. It was premiered on May 16, 2014, at Wilson Jr. H.S. by the Imperial High School Tiger Band, Brooke Kofford directing. The work is moderately difficult, mainly because of the use of double flats.

Composed by Kara Williams. Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,March. Score and Parts. 69 pages. Kara Williams #870997. Published by Kara Williams (A0.1279514).

The third movement from the four movement 'Suite in Sea' written for clarinet and piano by Kara Williams, 'Brew Time March' has been orchestrated for wind ensemble by the composer and has since proven to be a favourite with performers and audiences.

We follow a young sailor as they excitedly hear the bugle call to have a break from work (brew time), grab a coffee (brew) and sit on the bow to watch the waves… lost in thoughts, the young sailor unexpectedly hears the sound of work recommencing, and scurries back, making it just in the nick of time… waiting eagerly for next the next call for Brew Time!

Opening with the 'Stand Easy' (break time) bugle call, Brew Time March is full of familiarly-sea-worthy sounds, and is a fun concert march that would be a great addition to any ensemble's library.

In the style of a traditional military march, unless otherwise specified, notes should be played slightly detached throughout. Ensure the bass solo has plenty of attitude, and the rhythmic accompanying parts let the melodies breathe. Use a small set of crash cymbals (if parade-style cymbals are not available) - your percussionist will thank you! Also, hit the cymbals together slightly off-centre for zing and dynamic control, and hold the edges of the cymbals against the body to choke the ring where indicated. Keep this march a very steady two-feel throughout; however, feel free to completely stress the upper woodwinds out by going as fast as musically possible where marked at the end :-)

Brew Time March runs for around 2:45 and is scored for full wind ensemble; however, it will work without one, some, or all the following parts: piccolo, 4th clarinet, baritone sax, bass clarinet, bassoon, horns in F, and bass trombone.

Goin' Home For Band (also called Going Home)
Based on the Largo from the New World Symphony By Antonin Dvorak Arranged by Jari Villanueva

Score
Set of Parts
Substitute part for Baritone TC provided

Goin' Home, is based on the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak's famous Largo theme from his Symphony No. 9 (5) (From the New World), Op. 95. His symphony was composed while he was in America and was first performed by the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall on December 16, 1893. It has been said that Dvorak's themes in his symphony were inspired by American folk melodies, especially Afro-American or American Indian. But his themes are just as similar to Bohemian folk music and most likely from that music. This arrangement is based on the one played in the movie Clear and Present Danger by the United States Air Force Band. It has been used at presidential funerals for the departure ceremonies at Andrews Air Force Base for Presidents Reagan, Ford and Bush. It was used in 1998 for the dis-interment ceremony for the Vietnam Unknown at Arlington National Cemetery and is still used today by military bands at Arlington.

Jari Villanueva earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and a Master of Music from Kent State University, Ohio. He retired from the US Air Force Band in Washington DC where he spent 23 years as a trumpeter, bugler and staff arranger. He started his publishing company JV MUSIC in 1995. A student of Bill Holcombe, he continues writing for different ensembles and his arrangements are played by bands, brass ensembles and brass quintets all over the country.

Abraham Lincoln Funeral March for Concert Band
By John Gross Barnard Orchestrated by Jari Villanueva

This funeral march written by John Gross Barnard was performed by the United States Marine Band during the funeral procession from the Executive Mansion to the Capitol for Abraham Lincoln on April 19, 1865. The march is titled: Funeral March in Memory of the Abraham Lincoln: Played at the Obsequies of the President of the United States by the US Marine Band.

The funeral march follows the standard format of dirges of the time (most notable are Webster’s Funeral March, Chopin’s Funeral March and March in Saul by Handel) written in minor keys (considered somber) and divided into eight measure phrases which makes it easy for the funeral cadence to be played underneath. This funeral march, like most written during this time, has a transition to a major key (happier sounding). This march goes to the relative major (D minor to D major) key.

Since no parts are extant from the US Band, I was asked to score the march for a modern symphonic band. I hoped to capture the somber drum beat and employed a chime to replicate the bells that tolled along the funeral route.

Composed by Amy Dunker. Contemporary,Holiday,Patriotic. Score and parts. 20 pages. Amy Dunker #3873213. Published by Amy Dunker (A0.969830).

For God and Country was written in honor of Lt. Aloysius Schmitt for the Loras College Wind Ensembles, Glenn Pohland, director. The Catholic chaplain and Columbia College (now Loras College) graduate gave his life helping twelve of his shipmates exit a porthole on the side of the U.S.S. Oklahoma as it took enemy torpedo fire, rolled over and finally faltered on the morning of December 7, 1941.

Throughout the work, the Navy Hymn Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a reoccurring motive.  Several U.S. Navy bugle calls are also used in the work including portions of Abandon Ship, Man Overboard, Man Torpedo Defense Battery and Watertight Doors.  The work ends with a quiet and solemn rendition of the Navy Hymn in various solo instruments.
