In Seaspray, Barefoot imagines a young person running down from sand dunes into the ocean and being chased by the waves back up into the dunes, in a playful dance.  The wind ensemble arrangement is scored for Piccolo, Flute 1 & 2, Oboe, Clarinet in Eb, Clarinets in Bb 1, 2 & 3, Bass Clarinet in Bb, Bassoon 1 & 2, Alto Sax 1 & 2, Tenor Sax, Bari Sax, Horn in F 1 & 2, Trumpet in Bb 1 & 2, Trombone 1 & 2, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Double Bass and 2 Percussion (Snare + Cymbals; and Bass Drum).  Originally composed for violin & piano, alternate arrangements are available for tuba & piano, clarinet & piano, euphonium & piano, flugelhorn & piano and flute & piano.  A guitar accompaniment is also available for violin, clarinet or alto flute in an arrangement by Rodrigo Baggio.  The piece was premiered September 9, 2012, by Denise Stillwell, violin, and Yumi Suehiro, piano, on the Composer's Voice concert series at the Jan Hus Church, New York City.

Bagley’s most famous march but he composed several other marches and various band works to include a comic opera.  America Victorious is fashioned much like National Emblem and gives melodic lines to the low brass.  Woodwinds have flourishes and in the trio have ornamentation one would expect the trumpets to perform.  A wonderful march for patriotic summer concerts!

One of our favorite songs that he sang was The Far North Land. Several years ago, my sister recorded our father singing this song for use on the soundtrack of one of her movies. I recently transcribed the song from that recording and used it as the foundation for this piece. My aunts tell me they recall my father singing this song when he was a boy growing up in Minnesota, and that they referred to it as Fletch’s song. It was only while working on this piece that I discovered that Duncan, Clear Water and Bear Skin are actual lakes in the border lakes region where Minnesota meets Canada. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733030). Boston Commandery is a Masonic march written by Thomas W. Carter in 1892. It was dedicated to the regional office of the Freemasony that was headquartered in the city of Boston, Massachusetts. In the march, Carter used the hymn Onward Christians Soldiers by Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan as the melody for the trio, with the woodwinds providing the obbligato above the music. There have been many composers who were Masons; among them are Edward E. Bagley, W. Paris Chambers, Herbert L. Clarke, Merle Evans, Henry Fillmore, Karl L. King and John Philip Sousa. And Freemasony also includes in its ranks such musical luminaries as Louis Armstrong, Gene Autry, Count Basie, Ludwig van Beethoven, Irving Berlin, Roy Clark, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and Paul Whiteman.
