Love Birds, from the musical of the same name, is the singer’s real time emotional journey from a perspective of melancholy to a place of hope. As the song commences, the singer believes that his chances at finding true love have long passed him by. As the song progresses however, a spark of hope is rekindled. At the song’s conclusion the singer has reunited with his true love and, like the love birds he so admires, the singer metaphorically “soars without a care. This arrangement is for Big Band. The Three Ravens is an English folk ballad first compiled and published by Thomas Ravenscroft in 1611, but it is perhaps even older. 
The ballad takes the form of three scavenger birds conversing about where and what they should eat. One tells of a newly slain knight, but they find he is guarded by his loyal hawks and hounds.

The old folk tune is arranged for concert band. It is in the medium level.

East Texas, A Bear Hunt, the third of five movements from A Texas Symphony, is a musical illustration of an actual two day bear hunt that took place in 1906 in the Big Thicket. The hunting party consisted of 10 hunters led by Texas Legendary Hunters, Ben Lilly and Bud Hooks, and 8 hunting hounds. The music opens with a joyful fiddle theme representing nighttime around the campfire.  As the night falls, the music quietens and percussion instruments (cabasa and woodblock) introduce crickets, woodpeckers and nighttime sounds.  A rainstick and plucked strings bring the nighttime rain.  With the morning, ascending strings herald the sunrise, with solo woodwinds bringing birdsong.  The hunt theme is introduced by the brass.  The bear theme is played by the bassoon, who is surrounded by bees, played by dissonant strings.  As the hunt begins, the bear becomes alarmed, then the chase ensues.  The high point of the chase arrives with an orchestra hit.  The piece concludes with a triumphant return to the campsite. This fun piece is enjoyed by musicians and audiences for the fun melodies and unusual percussion sounds, length approx 12 minutes..

The Circus Cavalry embodies the style of marches and descriptive light-music similar to Leroy Anderson. The Circus Cavalry follows the form of traditional marches, but ends with a descriptive coda in the original key.  Listeners can imagine the opening parade of performers, clowns, and animals under the big top circus tent.  After the main performance is finished, the coda portrays the clowns’ prolonged merriment, which results in a whip crack from the ringmaster to keep the show on schedule.  The Circus Cavalry is perfect for any circus, carnival, or children’s themed band concert!
