The Great Rock Island Route, popularized as Wabash Cannonball and various other titles, is a 19th-century American folk song that describes the scenic beauty and predicaments of a fictional train, the Wabash Cannonball Express, as it traveled on the Great Rock Island Railroad. The song has become a country music staple and common marching band repertoire. The only train to actually bear the name was created in response to the song's popularity, the Wabash Railroad renaming its daytime express service between Detroit and St. Louis the Wabash Cannon Ball from 1949 until discontinuation during the formation of Amtrak in 1971.

The Carter Family made one of the first recordings of the song in 1929, though it was not released until 1932. Another popular version was recorded by Roy Acuff in 1936. The Acuff version is one of the fewer than 40 all-time singles to have sold 10 million (or more) physical copies worldwide.

The tune is most famously associated with Kansas State University athletics and ESPN in 2016 named it the top Big Twelve football pregame ritual. It is also a signature song of the Indiana State University Marching Sycamores and the Purdue All-American Marching Band as the ISU and Purdue campuses are adjacent to the Mighty Wabash River. It is also associated with the Stephen F. Austin State University Lumberjack Marching Band, the Kansas State University Marching Band, the Texas Tech University Goin' Band from Raiderland, and the University of Texas Longhorn Band. It was also used as the theme song by USS Wabash.

The song The Wabash Cannonball is part of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list. It is the oldest song on the list.

Amidst the Thunder of Cannons' is 1 of 2 band works written by Carl Meinecke although his focus was mostly on orchestra where he was both violinist and conductor. The music was published first by A.E. Fischer in Germany in 1907 and in 1913 by Carl Fischer in the US. The piece is well crafted in the German march style with skillful melodic and contrapuntal writing. There is a refreshing change of meter from cut time to 6/8 at the Trio. Marc Oliver's brand new edition is crisp and clean and the first new edition in nearly a century. 'Amidst the Thunder of Cannons' is a welcome addition to the band repertoire in the 21st century.

Here is a piece with a bit of fire in it. Battle At Sandy Hook refers to the Battle of Monmouth that occurred in Sandy Hook, NJ in 1778 and is written for middle school bands. The bass drum solo imitates a cannon shot and the nice clarinet soli in the clarion register with a flute counter melody give the piece a soothing effect. Complete with an eight line score and parts for flute, oboe, clarinet 1,2&3, bass clarinet, alto sax 1&2, tenor sax, baritone sax, f horn 1&2, trumpet 1&2, trombone 1&2, baritone BC, tuba, bells and percussion.

I was commissioned to write this arrangement for band from a piano piece discovered in an antique store by Mitch Sturman, director of the Woodrow Wilson Junior High School Band in El Centro, California. Given the title of the piece, and the fact that Mr. Sturman was the band director at Woodrow Wilson Jr. High School, he was immediately drawn to the piece.  He researched the work and could only find an identical copy at the Library of Congress.  No version for band was found, even after checking with the Marine Corps Band, The President's Own, which had performed at the Inauguration.  This band arrangement received its premiere by The Wilson Junior High School Band on May 25, 2016, at the Jimmie Cannon Performing Arts Theatre, El Centro, CA, with the arranger conducting. .

The Theme (Three blind Mice) is introduced in Eb Major, common time, as a cannon in three parts. The first variation is in 3/4 time in Dm, followed by variation #2 in DM, in an easy Jazz style, back in common time. The 3rd variation, also in D Major, is a Viennese waltz in 3/4. Variation #4, comes back in Eb Major, common time, as a chorale with a typical classical Coda. Best of all, every woodwind and brass player has a chance at the melody, and parts are doubled to sound full with even the smallest bands.
