I Love You Always Forever is the debut single by Welsh singer Donna Lewis from her debut album, 'Now in a Minute' (1996). Written by Lewis, it was released as the album's lead single in the United States in April 1996 and in the United Kingdom in August that year. Inspired by the novel 'Love for Lydia' by English author H. E. Bates, the lyrics of the song declare endless love for her significant other. The song was originally titled Lydia, but was later changed because there was no mention of anyone with that name in the song. The chorus, I love you always forever, near and far closer together, is a quote taken directly from the book. The success of I Love You Always Forever earned Lewis a nomination for Best British Female Artist at the 1997 Brit Awards and in 2016, a cover version of the song by Australian pop singer Betty Who peaked at number six on the ARIA Singles Chart and topped the US Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. The song has seen a resurgence recently in its use as background for various internet memes. Turn back the clock with this timeless love song, for a Valentine's concert or at any time, really.

My first complete concert band piece. It's been in the works for about 3 months. The early drafts of this piece were written in April/May and were then left to collect dust for months. I wrote it to experiment with melodic/harmonic minor scales and did not intend to finish the piece. Around the same time I wrote the early drafts of the piece, my high school band director asked if I wanted to write a piece for the concert band. I agreed and spent months working on different pieces of music, completing none of them. Around late October I stumbled across this looking through old pieces of music for some new ideas. I listened through it 3 or 4 times and decided to continue the piece. After spending roughly two months finishing the draft, and another month revising and adding parts, I had finally finished Trapped. When I started working on this piece with the intention of finishing it, I was at a difficult point in my life. I had recently come home from my rookie season of drum corps and was still transitioning back to the real world. The freedom of tour had been taken away from me, I had mentally matured a lot during the summer. While only 17 I felt like I was stuck with a bunch of kids. I had spent all summer with friends much older than me, learning a lot from them and taking inspiration from them in many ways. When I started this piece, I was conflicted with many thoughts and emotions. I was still under the impression that my peers in the music program hated me because of some of my actions last year. The girl from home I had been talking with all summer while I was gone, and hoped to start a relationship with, lied to me while I was gone about many things, causing me to remove them from my life. The last year and a half have involved many events like losing my best friend of 5 years because of, what I consider, an overreaction on my part; being used for my kindness; lied to; having secrets about me revealed behind my back by those I trusted; being a therapy friend; constant overthinking; as well as toxic friendships I didn’t want to leave because I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I felt trapped. I had spent so long trying to improve myself to become who I am today, and I still felt like crap. Even though I knew and promised myself I wouldn’t follow through, I was battling suicidal thoughts and I was in a severely depressive episode of my life. I wrote this piece to express the feeling of overthinking, being trapped in your mind, and the road to recovery. The constant back-and-forth battles with yourself, unsure of where to go and what to do next; feeling trapped. I hope that this piece connects and resonates with those of you in a similar position to what I was in, and I promise there is a way out and that life does get better. And with that, I present to you, Trapped.

This is a composition that might be a mix between a new Christmas song and remix or the others Christmas classics. The reason why I created a composition because other Christmas songs because I remember rehearing many different Christmas songs and never knew what to pick or create so I remixed that and made a story on Christmas in the attic. Based off of the composer's imagination and drama added to the music with a mixed of fun sound effects. This might not just be the Christmas song, but another story made up in a song form. A delightful little waltz that sounds a bit off kilter because it has seven-measure phrases. To balance that, there are also two countermelodies presented, with the final A section featuring the main melody and both countermelodies in a grand calliope sound. The Cantummit Waltz is called that because I found it hard to hum a few bars when asked to do so by some people who were helping me name it. So they suggested that I call it the I Can't Hum It Waltz. Can't Hum It became Cantummit.

I composed this piece because I wanted to get myself used to composing for large ensembles, wind ensemble particularly. This composition took the most time and energy in creating the biggest work I have taken on thus far. This piece allowed me to get a better insight of my creativity as well as incorporate the lessons I have learned from my music professors. The experience was well worth it for I now know what I am capable of in my compositions and I look forward to working on more works in large ensembles in the future. During the time I composed this piece, I was expecting to have it performed around April 2020. However, that was around the time when COVID started spreading around the world and so that experience was lost to me. I hope someday it will be performed under better days.

I arranged the Prelude in Gm, by Rachmaninoff, for Concert Band, because I think it's important that concert/wind bands play arrangements of piano repertoire, too, as this is very rarely done; further, I would say that the character of this prelude really settles in quite nicely with that of a concert/wind band. I decided to arrange the first movement of Widor's Sixth Symphony because I deem of paramount importance that Band Directors start making the concert band repertoire more varied, so as to avoid what usually happens: concert/wind bands keep playing the same pieces over and over again, usually Tchaikovsky overtures, or Wagnerian overtures. Namely, I think that the various textures this arrangement, when properly played, provides, will make for a very interesting piece.

This piece is a slow, reflective piece, meant to capture the feeling of Autumn. I wrote it while watching the leaves change color and eventually fall from the trees through my office window, after all. (I miss that view).

It has several solos and soli opportunities sprinkled throughout, especially in the flute. And because I always felt sad that percussionists often got left out of the slow emotional pieces, I did my best to write parts to include a few more of them than you see in typical slow band pieces.

I composed and dedicated this piece to my 2022-2023 students of the band program at the Melaleuca Elementary School (FL). The work was premiered in May 2023.

I composed this piece using a 5 music notes scale (F to Low Bb), simple rhythmic combinations, an ABA form, unisons, and duet textures. The drums and percussion students are featured in this piece having them playing alone. The piece includes a simple bachata (Latino genre) rhythmic pattern for the bongo drums because I have many Hispanic students as band members. This piece will suit your beginner concert band if you are a band teacher who wants to present a concert with music other than the exercises from the band method.

The Circus Bee is a circus march written by Henry Fillmore of Cincinnati, Ohio in February 1908. Because of its complexity and advanced writing, it is sometimes used as either an opener or an encore piece in band concerts. The Circus Bee was a celebration of sorts for the fact that Henry Fillmore and his father, who managed their publishing business in Cincinnati, finally agreed that the young composer could publish his music at home, even though it did not meet the elder Fillmore's standard of being religious music. It was during this period of conflict between father and son that Henry, showing defiance to his father for not repenting his desire to write marches, reportedly told him, I will huff and I will puff, and I will continue to write marches. This alleged statement by the younger Fillmore gave birth to one of his many composing pseudonyms, Will Huff. The march is named after an imaginary circus newspaper and reflects Fillmore's lifelong interest in circuses and his varied experiences while touring with five different big top shows where he played the trombone. He was also famous for his many trombone marches, such as Bones Trombone, Teddy Trombone and the famous Lassus Trombone, all showcasing the trombone glissando, or smear, caused by moving the trombone slide in and out while playing the instrument (usually loud).

PROGRAM NOTE:  Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, has been  commissioning works, both new works and modern arrangements of old works, for nine years for an annual Concert  of Premieres each May.  He commissioned me to arrange this military march by Juan de Arriaga for his 9th Annual  Concert of Premieres for the 2015-2016 Academic year.  

Juan Crisóstomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola (January 27, 1806 – January 17, 1826) was a Spanish Basque  composer. He was nicknamed the Spanish Mozart after he died, because, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, he was both  a child prodigy and an accomplished composer who died young. They also shared the same first and second baptismal  names; and they shared the same birthday, January 27 (fifty years apart).    

The Marcha Militar was written in 1820 when Arriaga was 14 years old.  The original is scored for requinto (a small, 3/4-size guitar tuned in F, a fourth above the normal quitar), piccolo in D,  two clarinets in B-flat, two small trumpets in B-flat, two large trumpets in B-flat, two bassoons in B-flat, serpent in  A-flat, trombone in B-flat, triangle, chimes, cymbals, side drum, and bass drum.  I have arranged the piece for a modern band of piccolo, flute, oboe, three clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet in B-flat,  alto sax in E-flat, tenor sax in B-flat, bari sax in E-flat , bassoon, French horn in F, three trumpets in B-flat, baritone  horn (with parts for both bass clef and transposing B-flat treble clef),trombone, tuba, triangle, snare drum, cymblas,  bass drum, and glockenspiel.  As this arrangement was originally meant for a junior high school band, some notes may cause range problems for  young, less experienced players.  I have indicated these notes with smaller noteheads in parenthesis. While these  parenthetical notes are the preferred notes, and should be played if possible, it is assumed the regular-sized note is  probably the one which will probably need to be played.
