  • The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is silent German expressionist film from 1920. Considered by many to be the first 'true' horror film, Caligari was incredibly innovative with its use of cinematography, warped sets, and the first substantial use of what is now known as the ‘plot-twist’ ending. The title character of the film, Dr. Caligari, has a cabinet - (believe it or not!) - and in this cabinet lives the somnambulist (the sleepwalker), Cesare, who goes around carrying out Caligari's evil deeds. Directed by Robert Wiene and staring Werner Krauss and Conrad Veidt, The Cabinet of Dr. Calagari continues to influence, inspire, and captivate filmmakers even today. This work for concert band makes use of several themes used in Deterling's orchestral score that he composed to accompany the film:

  • ’Dr. Caligari’ theme [A] - first heard in alto saxophones and horns (measures 5-6).
    ‘Dr. Caligari’ theme [B] - first heard in clarinets 1, 2 and trumpets (measures 13-14).
    ‘Cesare’ theme - first heard in low winds and low brass (measures 20-22).
    ‘Jane/Love’ theme - first heard in horns and trombones (measures 61-64).
    ‘Plot twist is about to happen’ theme - first heard in clarinets (measures 113-116).

Pettiford and Dr. Miles have enriched the lives of countless students, and my life has been richly blessed by having

This work is one of the first that I composed and, over the years, it has undergone various orchestrations. One of them, and one of the most recent, is the one heard here, for wind orchestra. This is a live performance by the University of St. Thomas Symphonic Wind Ensemble (St. Paul, Minnesota) conducted by Maestro Dr. Matthew George.

The New Horizons March was first performed at the New Horizons Band Camp in Chautauqua, N. Y., in 2004 under the direction of Dr. Roy Ernst, founder of the New Horizons International Music Association. The NHIMA now has over 180 concert bands, orchestras, and choral groups with 8,000 participants in 5 countries. Dr. Ernst has conducted the march at many New Horizons music camps.The first theme of the march is a vocal section which can be personalized by inserting the name of the local band in place of New Horizons Band. It has an alternate vocal score for non-New Horizons Bands which is a tribute to the New Horizons satellite. Dr. Ernst has provided the following suggestions for the Conductors:

Composed for the U. S. Naval Academy Band, the Navy's oldest band, and the third oldest military ban in the United States. The march is a tribute to the ensemble in honor of its 150th Anniversary and premiered at their gala Sesquicentennial concert in 2003. In 6/8 meter, the march features a chromatic Introduction built on a 12-tone row. The First and Second strains (in F Major) are lively, bright, and completely tonal. The incipit of the trio (in B-flat) consists of the first four notes of Anchors Aweigh. This is significant for the USNA Band because it was composed by Lt. Charles A. Zimmermann, selected as Bandmaster of the ensemble in 1887 at the age of 26, and Midshipman First Class Alfred Hart Miles, supposed while seated at the Naval Academy Chapel organ. The trio is played three times; the first is interrupted by the Break Strain. The Introduction then serves to both conclude the Break Strain and to transition into the first repeat of the Tiro, this time featuring the saxophone section on the countermelody. One more Break Strain and Introduction builds to the final statement of the Trio, with coda and triplet stinger.
