Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.908413 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by John M. Licari. Contemporary,Folk,Standards,World. Score and parts. 55 pages. Music Preparation Services #5899717. Published by Music Preparation Services (A0.908413). Minka, Minka (Concert Band - Grade 2)Traditional; arr. John M. LicariMusic Preparation Serviceswww.musicprepservices.comMinka, Minka had derived from the Ukrainian folk tune Ikhav Kozak za Dunaj and was written by Semen Klimovski.  Many composers had adapted this tune for their works, notably Ludwig van Beethoven and Carl Maria von Weber.  This arrangement tries to capture the Eastern European feel that one may characterize (or caricaturize).      This arrangement started off as an assignment while taking Composing and Arranging for School Bands with Dr. Scott Watson (Alfred, Hal Leonard, Wingert-Jones) at Central Connecticut State University in the summer of 2014.    Minka, Minka is arranged in band-friendly C-harmonic minor.  A few items to remember:    - Upper winds have a minor second trill on concert Ab to A?  - The section starting at 53 should be played as delicate as one would allow.  - The section starting at 69 should appear to gain momentum.  - The section starting at 88 should be equal or stronger than it has first appeared.

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1281978 Composed by John P.W. Hudson. 20th Century,Contest,Festival. Score and Parts. 90 pages. 'Published by John P.W. Hudson #872903. Published by 'Published by John P.W. Hudson (A0.1281978). Premiered June 6th, 2023 by the Killarney Senior Wind Ensemble and Alumni directed by Meagan Lawson, 'Killarney Carnivale' is a programmatic piece describing a small town carnival in rural Manitoba in the early 1930's, spotlighting the family of the town dentist, Dr. Martin McLaren, his wife Irene, and their six girls. 'Killarney Carnivale' describes a fictitious event, but the family is that of the composer, John Hudson. His mother, (second in a family of six girls), as a young teen in Killarney Manitoba, loved playing piano and aspired to be a concert pianist playing her favourite composers in concert halls. Her dreams took a different turn when the family had to move west for Dr. McLaren's health, but she carried with her the melodies she composed and later played to her own children.Picture John Hudson listening to hours of his mother playing piano as a young boy in the early 1950's, immersed in his mother's beautiful music. After her passing in 2010, he longed to hear these beautiful, playful melodies again. His sister Jane Keyes had become a professional piano player and happily took up the task of recreating several of their mother's pieces, which John, now a retired band director, began to transcribe. Inspired by a photograph of the family that very much looked like a carnival booth style photograph, 'Killarney Carnivale' came to life. It opens as the youngest, probably under age two at the time, wakes up. The scene swiftly changes to arrival at the much - anticipated carnival, with all of its magical sights, sounds and heavenly smells of popcorn and treats. First is the carousel, with wooden horses flying about in endless circles with children regaling with laughter. The next is a sideshow tent featuring the exotic dancer Salome, who wiled King Herod, (and probably more than a few in the audience) as her thin, tantalizing veils hinted at her charms. The next tent is dim and displays the wierd and mysterious curiosities from around the world like bearded ladies, dwarfs and the like. The cakewalk is next, with children vying to be the last person sitting as chairs are removed and the music abruptly stops each time. (This section could host a real cakewalk with a few chairs and willing audience participation. Three chairs is suggested.)Finally, the exhausted family drives home in their antique (to us) automobile with the childrens' hair flying in the breeze. One by one, the excited children fall prey to dreamland, and at long last, the exhausted parents flop into bed too.Honouring his mother's short pieces has been a life long dream of Mr. Hudson, and to hear them played by the Killarney Wind Ensemble and Alumni Band was a poignant moment: the return of these melodies to the little town where they first came to life. Many, many thanks to Meagan Lawson, their director, and all of the members of the Killarney band who so very willingly took up the challenge of playing 'Killarney Carnivale'. Their hard work and dedication to this piece is deeply, deeply appreciated.

Concert Band - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1430031 Composed by Frederick Septimus Kelly. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Classical,Multicultural,Romantic Period,World. 67 pages. John Ivor Holland #1010645. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1430031). Born in Sydney in 1881, the seventh child of a wealthy family, Kelly was educated at Sydney Grammar School before being sent to England where he attended Eton College and Oxford University. At Eton his musical talents were nurtured under the tutelage of Dr Charles Harford Lloyd. He also developed a passion for rowing, eventually winning a gold medal for England in the 1908 London Olympics. After graduating from Oxford, Kelly began five years of musical study in piano and composition at the Hoch Conservatorium in Frankfurt, Germany. He made his professional debut as a pianist in Sydney in 1911. His London debut followed in 1912. His career was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War.Elegy for String Orchestra In Memoriam Rupert Brooke was written during his war service in the final year of his life. It is an accomplished and moving work in the English pastoral style of the time, its lush modal string-writing sounding not unlike his famous English near-contemporary Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958). In the Australian context it stands out as a mature and beautiful musical statement by an Australian composer in relation to actual personal experiences of the tragedy of the First World War. As such it's unique in the Australian classical canon, and also part of that wider generational tragedy of what might have been if such an accomplished composer had lived on to create music into his old age. Arranged from the original string orchestra for symphonic wind ensemble and harp.

Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.937904 Composed by Dr. Anthea John-Phillip. Contemporary,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 28 pages. Anthea John-Phillip #2031107. Published by Anthea John-Phillip (A0.937904). This easy intermediate band piece has a more march-like style even though it is written in 3/4 time. Instrumentation spans an octave with the clarinets staying below the bridge. The snare drum plays rolls and sixteenth note rhythms in formulated patterns for ease of execution. Written in concert Eb Major, From Cloud to Cloud uses thematic melody lines and countermelodies to convey dancing children playing hopscotch in the clouds. This piece is light and fun, while working on intervals of a 3rd, a 4th as well as scale-like passages. A perfect piece for public performances that highlights the different instruments through numerous soli sections.
