The piece begins with a clarion call from the brass, the fanfares of the present culminating in the Maestoso. Then the music becomes more distant, fanfares of the past played by woodwinds and muted brass. The transition brings us back to the present with the return to the full band’s salute to Saskatchewan’s Centennial.

As Vesta Was From Latmos Hill Descending tells the story of the Roman Goddess Vesta descending from a mythical hill and encountering the maiden queen, Oriana, ascending. The English composer and organist Thomas Weelkes composed this madrigal as part of a series of madrigals honoring Queen Elizabeth I known as The Triumphes of Oriana (Queen Elizabeth I was often called Oriana). Weelkes employed the technique of word painting in his composition and I maintained as much as possible in this arrangement for concert band. This arrangement is playable by advanced middle school and high school ensembles.

Slower than the standard march tempo of 120 bpm, this march reflects the majestic and stately manner of England's long reigning monarch. Utilizing a fully instrumented concert band, The Queens's English includes a full battery of six percussion and two mallet players. Though I am not of Doukhobor or even Russian descent, I spent several years immersed in the rich tradition of Doukhobor music, and even sang in a Doukhobor choir. This piece is based on a Doukhobor folk song of the same name. (English translation is Elizabeth) As Doukhobor music is not written down, this piece is based on a transcription I made of a recording of a male trio performing it. In that particular performance, the melody was in the Bass voice, and I have chosen to primarily leave the melody in the Bass instruments, in keeping with my transcription of the recording.The price includes the full score and all the parts.
