An adaptation of the magnificent bass aria Ella giammai m'amò from Giuseppe Verdi's Grand Opera Don Carlos. The arrangement was made for the 95th Anniversary Gala Concert of Sinsen Konsertorkester (Sinsen Concert Band), held in Oslo, Norway on October 28 2023. The arrangement is made to match the composers intentions as closely as possible, and turned out to be one of the highlights of a great concert. The original cello solo in the introduction was performed by the arranger himself on trombone, but the musical director is free to let the solo be performed by any suitable instrument. Additional parts will be made available on request.

Inno della Banda San Gottardo di Barghe - Concert Band

Commissioned by Banda Musicale San Gottardo di Barghe for the Centenary of the band 2009

This composition was commissioned by Banda Musicale San Gottardo di Barghe in Italy for the Centenary of the band 2009. They wanted something resembling a processional march or a hymn - I think this has elements of both. The percussion parts are an important part of the feel and style of the composition. The extended introduction is meant to build and then die away before the main theme appears. The band has already performed this composition and by all reports, it was well received. There is also optional piano part included in the score.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg ('Les Parapluies de Cherbourg') is a 1964 French romantic-drama-musical film written and directed by Jacques Demy, with music and lyrics by Michel Legrand, winning the Palme d'Or at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival and nominated for several Oscars; it was also adapted into an English-language stage musical. This enigmatic main title theme is otherwise known as the song (with English lyrics) I Will Wait For You and opens with a quartet of flute, horn, alto saxophone and bass clarinet, moving chromatically through several keys to its sultry conclusion. A wonderful slice of French song-writing that will provide a contrasting slower moment in any concert and highlight your star players.

In the spirit of Scott Joplin, The Old Warsh Rag is a ragtime piece for concert band. It’s intricate enough to offer a bit of a challenge, yet very playable so that the band enjoys its efforts. There’s a counter melody that is played by itself and then superimposed on the main melody at the end. It’s written for high school concert band or community band; I chose the key so that, even when it gets a bit intricate, it should be easy enough for everyone to play. The title for The Old Warsh Rag is a tribute to the unique way that people speak where I grew up in southwestern Pennsylvania.

The Humble Waltz is also a delightful little waltz that sounds much more normal than its sister waltz, The Cantummit Waltz. The Humble Waltz also has two countermelodies presented separately, with the final A section featuring the main melody and both countermelodies in a grand calliope sound. The Humble Waltz was written as a response to the Cantummit Waltz and is much more hummable.

A delightful little waltz that sounds a bit off kilter because it has seven-measure phrases. To balance that, there are also two countermelodies presented, with the final A section featuring the main melody and both countermelodies in a grand calliope sound. The Cantummit Waltz is called that because I found it hard to hum a few bars when asked to do so by some people who were helping me name it. So they suggested that I call it the I Can't Hum It Waltz. Can't Hum It became Cantummit.

This arrangement of Windy is simple and fun, just like the girl described in the song. It opens with a tuba and woodblock duet and then skips along happily through a couple meter changes and ends delightfully in two parts. In some ways, this is a relatively simple song. In other ways, it’s tricky. At one place, the melody is tossed around, being played by most instruments within 8 measures. Then, it morphs into 6/8 time for just a few delightful measures before going back to 4/4 for the grand wind-up. IMPORTANT NOTE: The Cover Pages and Conductor's Score are 8.5 x 14. They will need to be printed on appropriate sized paper.

Although often attributed to J. S. Bach, the Minuet in G major was actually written by Christian Petzold. This arrangement pays homage to the flavor of the original by using a traditional chamber wind quintet for the opening measures. Then it morphs into a lively pop version that employs alternate chords and modal settings, counter motion and counter-melodic elements, prepared fifths instead of the modern suspension, and an uplifting key change.  PLEASE NOTE - THE COVER PAGES AND CONDUCTOR'S SCORE ARE 8.5 X 14 INSTEAD OF 8.5 X 11.

Ave Regina Caelorum is an a capella motet by the late Italian Renaissance composer, Carlo Gesualdo. Gesualdo, a prince of Venosa, is infamously remembered for murdering his first wife and her lover. However, his legacy to the world of music is undeniable. While his use of chromaticism is most associated with his madrigals, his religious works, such as this, are more diatonic. When he does employ dissonance and chromaticism it has a far more dramatic effect. This setting is playable by middle school bands and can be played with limited instrumentation. 2nd clarinet parts remain below the break and 2nd trumpet parts stay in a manageable range. It provides the opportunity to both teach expressive playing and introduce the idea of chromaticism to students

Arrangement for Concert Band. Score in portrait format and parts in landscape format. The song Freed From Desire was recorded in 1996 by Italian singer Gala on her second album Come into my life. The lyrics criticize the desire to always have more money, but also power or fame. This song very quickly became an international hit, often played and sung during football or rugby world cups. There are many doubled parts in the orchestration, which will allow you to play this piece with a small band.
