SKU: A0.757442

Composed by James Michael bicigo. Contemporary,World. Score and parts. 52 pages. Polar Publications #3012023. Published by Polar Publications (A0.757442).

This work was commissioned by Ron Inyoue for the Arctic Winer Games in Fairbanks, Alaska 2014.

When Ron Inouye first discussed a fanfare for the Arctic Winter Games to be held in Fairbanks in 2014, he asked me to somehow represent the peoples of the north and to include something of

native drumming, particularly, Inuit drumming.

Since the fanfare is for the games, it needs to be able to be used in its entirity or in parts depending on how much time or the purpose of the fanfare in a given situation. This fanfare is therefore composed with three distinct sections that can be used separately or together depending on the circumstance.

The Opening four measures of the brass is reminiscent of much of my music representing the
Aurora Borealis. The Drumming is inspired by Inuit and Yupik drumming. I use the two different types
of drum and blend the drumming style of the Yupik and Inuit cultures in a bit of a western context.
The Yupik tradition of hard beat and soft beat is represented in the dynamics of the drums. The Inuit tradition of establishing the steady beat and then passing rhythmic patterns between the parts is represented throughout the work in all of the drum parts. There is a nod to Athabascan old time fiddle music in the choice of an Irish/Scotish traditional melody entitled The Far North. This is also a traditional Canadian Northern Tier American camping and scouting song. Finally, there is a traditional Fanfare that can be used independently to call people to an event or back from an intermission.

It is my sincere hope that this fanfare represents all of us in some way and leaves enough to the listener, that they will relate their own experience of the North in the music they hear.

Once Upon a Time in the West (C'era una volta il West) is a 1968 epic spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leone. It stars Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Jason Robards and Claudia Cardinale. The film is the first installment in Leone's Once Upon a Time trilogy, followed by Duck, You Sucker! and Once Upon a Time in America, though the films do not share any characters in common. In 2009, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. The film is regarded as one of the greatest Westerns of all time and one of the greatest films of all time.
The music was written by composer Ennio Morricone, Leone's regular collaborator, who wrote the score under Leone's direction before filming began. As in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the haunting music contributes to the film's grandeur and is considered one of Morricone's greatest compositions.

By Odyssey. By L. Russell Brown and Sandy Linzer. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Disco,Pop. 64 pages. John Ivor Holland #965544. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1380758).

Use It Up and Wear It Out is a song by US-based dance and soul group Odyssey that was released as a single in 1980. It firstly emerged as a B-side, but later re-released as an A, going on to spend twelve weeks on the UK Singles Chart, including two at No. 1, however failing to make commercial success in the US. The song was written by Sandy Linzer and L. Russell Brown and produced by Linzer, featuring retro (and distinctive) use of disco and siren whistles. A hi-energy cover by the duo Pat and Mick, produced by Stock Aitken Waterman, reached No. 22 on the UK Singles Chart ten years later in 1990, helping to raise funds for the charity 'Help a London Child'. This late disco classic is sure to liven up any concert, indoor or outdoor, and the whistles will certainly attract attention from far away!

Composed by Joseph Hasper. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Instructional. Score and parts. 93 pages. Joseph Hasper #753375. Published by Joseph Hasper (A0.1153134).

There are five main sections in this piece, each lasting exactly 21 measures. Why this unlikely number? I chose this number because the percussion parts, which are the driving force behind the piece, are based repeating patterns of 6, 7, and 8 eighth notes. It works out that these patterns only line up every 168 half-beats—which happens only at the end of 21 measures! The title for this piece was provided by Armstrong High School student Aaron Baker and was used as inspiration for the work. The phrase “endless routes†guided my decision to have several main themes instead of just one or two. The themes are widely different in character but share the feature that they each go to the same place—the very last half of the last beat of every twenty-first measure. The Minimalist style of music often features short musical fragments that are repeated many times in different combinations, and I used that technique to create a seemingly “endless†effect in the percussion parts. The percussion parts also use a colotomic structure, a technique often used in gamelan music of the far East. Unlike Western music, which generally has a strong accent on the first beat of a phrase, colotomic music accents the last beat of a phrase. You can hear this in Endless Routes when the percussion parts all become aligned and hit a simultaneous accent at the end of each section. This piece was commissioned and premiered by the Armstrong High School, under the direction of Jason Venesky. Mr. Venesky is a veteran teacher with over twenty years of experience in the Armstrong School District. He is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Performance (Tuba) and Music Education Certification and an active performer as Principal Tuba for the Butler County Symphony Orchestra; tubaist for the Armstrong Brass Quintet and Windsor Brass Quintet; and Bass Trombonist for the Gibbons Big Band. Mr. Venesky is currently Instructor of Tuba at Grove City College and Music Director for the Kittanning Community Band. Includes a full score and complete set of parts.

Composed by Traditional Australian Folk Song. Arranged by Brendan Elliget MAGA 537. Folk. Score and parts. 40 pages. BJE Music #4322387. Published by BJE Music (A0.750867).

In South Australia, I was born Heave away, haul away South Australia round Cape Horn We’re bound for South Australia
Heave away, you rolling king Heave away, haul away Heave away, oh hear me sing We’re bound for South Australia
Bound for South Australia or South Australia is a sea shanty used by the wool traders who worked the clipper ships between Australian ports and London. This traditional tune is well known as a farewell song, sung at the docks as the big ships were leaving.
The song has two distinct parts: The Shanty and Halyard.

This is a short arrangement for concert band. I also used this tune in my Australian Folksong Medley No. 2 for concert band. If you use this arrangement, let me know how it goes.
Parts include Eb Horns, Bb Bass, and Eb Bass.

This arrangement for mixed ability elementary concert band has been a hit in my school! Arranged to be well within the limits of first, second and third year players, this raucus tune will give your drummers a highlight they'll never forget! A real audience pleaser, too!  Not all band classes are at the same ability or grade level in elementary school. This arrangement has the first three notes players learn in most parts. Because the tune is so popular, syncopated rhythms are easy to teach. Only the piano and bass parts are at a higher level.  Enjoy!

By Roger Whittaker. By Roger Whittaker and Ronald Webster. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Folk,Pop,Singer/Songwriter. Score and Parts. 44 pages. John Ivor Holland #884691. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1294307).

The Last Farewell is a song from 1971 by British folk singer Roger Whittaker and Ron Webster. When Whittaker hosted a radio programme at that time, one of his ideas was to invite listeners to send their poems or lyrics to me and I would make songs out of them. We got a million replies, and I did one each week for 26 weeks. Webster, a silversmith from Birmingham, sent Whittaker his poem entitled The Last Farewell, and this became one of the selections to appear on the radio programme. It was recorded, and featured on Whittaker's 1971 album New World in the Morning (A Special Kind of Man in the US and Canada). It is one of the fifty all-time singles to have sold 10 million (or more) physical copies worldwide, peaking at number 2 on the UK Singles Chart. It was kept from number 1 by Rod Stewart's Sailing, resulting in an oddity that the top 2 songs in the UK singles chart at the time had a nautical theme. The Last Farewell also went to number 1 in 11 other countries, selling an estimated 11 million copies worldwide, making it Whittaker's best-known song. Created in memory of Roger Whittaker (1936-2023).

Composed by David Woodcock. 21st Century,Celtic,Classical,Contest,Festival,Irish,Medieval. 187 pages. David Woodcock #1090797. Published by David Woodcock (A0.1516625).

This is an heroic piece for Concert Band in three movements.

Programme Notes:
From a young age, I was always interested in castles and history, and have visited many castles in my home country of Wales, which is sometimes called the “castle capital of the world”. At one time Wales had about 600 castles, of which over 100 are still standing, either as ruins or restored buildings. The remainder have been reduced to ditches, mounds and earthworks. Visiting these amazing historically significant buildings has allowed me to reflect on their importance and purpose. In their day they were the centres of thriving communities and it is through their value as the focus of the community, that the three movements have developed their individual characteristics. The first movement depicts a large formidable castle, towering over the neighbouring lands, exuding power, authority and law, complete with noblemen and knights; the second movement describes the pastoral scenes around the castle, and the commoners going about their ordinary lives; the third demonstrates the military function of the castle which was to protect: when coming under siege, the people eventually triumph, the enemy defeated.
