This is a fairly straightforward arrangement of a melody by Felix Mendelssohn (1840) that has been designed to give each instrument an interesting part to play with a number of different groups playing the melody and accompaniment. It should work well with a choir or congregational singing the traditional words. There is a descant in the 3rd verse.

The music is adapted from Vaterland, in deinen Gauen by Felix Mendelssohn The flexible instrumentation enables a mixture of instruments, from small ensemble to orchestra. Essential fingerings and bowings are provided in the string parts. This arrangement is suitable for amateur players who have played the instrument for around 1 year. For instruments of Part 2, 3 and 4, the range is within one octave.

On two occasions, Felix Mendelssohn composed music for William Shakespeare's play 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. First in 1826, near the start of his career, he wrote a concert overture (Op. 21). Later, in 1842, five years before his death, he wrote incidental music (Op. 61) for a production of the play, which is where this lovely movement is found. Leading with horn and bassoon trio, this would provide a moment of tranquility in any programme, particularly in a concert of opera/ballet music or perhaps one of film music, as this has been used in several movie soundtracks.
