The music was published first by A.E. Fischer in Germany in 1907 and in 1913 by Carl Fischer in the US. The piece is well crafted in the German march style with skillful melodic and contrapuntal writing. There is a refreshing change of meter from cut time to 6/8 at the Trio. Marc Oliver's brand new edition is crisp and clean and the first new edition in nearly a century. 'Amidst the Thunder of Cannons' is a welcome addition to the band repertoire in the 21st century.

Lippencott Publishing Company, teaching music at Girard College, and co-owning a piano business and music store–all in Philadelphia. and he wrote the music of this Hymn arranged for the Symphonic Orchestra by Joseph Pugh.
